cheap rotary polisher + compounds??

Have you used a rotary before? They're different to a DA which is better for amateurs, a rotary can cause a lot of damage quickly if you're not experienced with them.

I echo that. If you have the experience then fair enough, but I've attended a machine polishing instructional course (via Detailing World - geeky as hell) and had the chance to use both. I don't trust myself with rotary - perhaps if I had more experience and a paint depth gauge then I'd reconsider.

I have this DA kit: http://www.chemicalguysuk.com/Chemical_Guys_Dual_Action_Polisher_Starter_Kit_p/cgdua.htm - contains 2 different polishes of different cutting abilities, with pads to match.

Whats a DA???

Dual Action. It rotates in an orbital way, reducing it's ability to generate heat in a small area, hence eliminating any risks of damaging the paint's surface.

Ah ok that's what the wife got me for Christmas i was going to give it a go at the weekend. All being well with the weather. So these are safe / safer? bit concerned to use it as i have heard horror stories.

Yes a DA is safer than a rotary. A rotary can heat up paint quickly and cause the paint to melt.

A DA moves more randomly and is less likely to cause problems, but is also harder work than a rotary for certain tasks.

Thanks all now what should i use/ My bonnet is really dull and been painted badly you can almost see how the paint has been applied. Or where its been polished there are stripes across it. It looks like the paint is worn away on the edges as well. I will be getting a front end respray at some point. Is it likely i can improve it with elbow grease?

Be careful especially towards the edges, always choose the less aggressive polishes/pad first and move up, normally BMW paint is very hard but you can never be sure.

Cool thanks the edges are already worn!! on the bonnet I am going o concentrate on the middle. I have no idea what sort of polish to use I have some AG resin stuff and a wax. And some old turtle wax witch I used on an old car.

Spotted this one last week, 5 year guarantee, pads available at £7.99p

Just spotted the speed, seems a bit fast for polishing 1500-300rpm

Way to fast,

I have a flex rotary. Its been sitting in the garage for a year now, keep meaning to attend a training day a KDS but every time they have one they seem to fall on a Kent meet so I'm yet to attend. Driving far more enjoyable :driving:

Not keen on a DA as they are noisy and vibrate to much. I can hear my neighbour who lives two doors up doing his car. While I'm sitting in the back garden.

If you use this link http://www.i4detailing.co.uk/acatalog/Sample_Packs_1.html, it takes you to sample sizes of compounds call them up and talk to them about what you intend to do and they will give you a steer as to what you need, do you have compounding pads ?
