Changing roof colour?

Hello! I'm looking at a Z4 and want to wrap it and need a black canvas roof. The car I'm looking at buying has a blue canvas roof. Is it possible to paint it a different colour? Do people trade/sell their roof covers? What are my options?

Hi buddy i have no idea how hard it is. But i could be interested in a swap can i see some pics?? Any one know how hard a job this is???

This could be good for both of us Tommy. I have thought i would like a blue roof ( if its the right shade and condition ) And your happy with mine this could happen. Hope your near to Oxford????

Thats a bit different Ranski. I quite like it :D

M monkey - have a search for the thread related to the above pic - I think it was quite cheap to do

Hi Monkey!

Thanks for the offer, I don't have a Z4 yet but am viewing a blue Z4 2003 3.0 tomorrow. Just wanted to know if there were people out there who would swap! (I'm in London) I'm looking to wrap it in Matt Black and it would look odd with a blue roof. Will PM you if I end up buying to see if you're interested in a swap and if I do buy it will make sure it's in good condition

Ok Tommy let me know how you get on. Happy viewing 2003 3.0l is a very good vintage got one myself.

A few things to cheek that i have had problems with.
1 Make sure the center chubby hole betwine the seats locks unlocks with the central locking.
2 Cheek the wipers work properly. That they only do 1 sweep on intermittent not a double sweep.
3 Probably the most important one. Put the roof down make sure it works. Then heater on full blast at your feet. Go for a long test drive if you can. And make sure it dose not have the sticky steering problem. It can be up to a 2k repair bill.
4 Obviously cheek everything else out.

Thanks again Ranski. My father in law has a silver mx5 with a dark blue roof it looks great. And it will match my blue mats. Omg i just sounded like my wife!!

Thanks for the buying tips! I'm a bit nervous as it's only the 2nd car I've bought. Looking at 3 Z4's tomorrow, hoping to buy tomorrow. The one with blue roof costs £2.5k more but has a ton of extras on it and is 3.0l not 2.5.

Any more tips what to look for? I know it's good to check the roof drains or something for grit?

I am no expert always take a level headed friend preferably someone who knows about cars. There is a tamper light on the dash that should let you know if its been clocked. Cheek service history. Have a look under the bonnet make sure there has been no heavy impact buckled or bent metal. Lots of them have had the front resprayed as they are so long and low. Look in the boot for damage the same as the front lift the carpets up. Dont rush into anything or be pushed around by a salesman there will always be another one. If the engine is warm when you get there be suspicious.

They are good cars and from my experience. And I have been unlucky with mine affordable to run and maintain. I think there is a topic on the forum. Alan J has a link look him up.

I'm lucky, my friend is a very talented professional mechanic and owns a BMW himself so am taking him with me. So he'll be able to check engine etc!

Thanks for tips they are great!

Sounds like you will have no problems then. The first things especial the steering is worth looking at. Good luck and we will all look forward to seeing the pictures when you pick it up

Cant say i have either. make sure you get some pics of it Tommy weather you get it or not. we all want to see it now? Is it on autotrader? Pistonheads i want to look??

Looking at photos again not 100% sure it's blue, might be black. Will get some photos tomorrow and report back! (Bit paranoid about posting links to listings in case someone else picks it up!)

Guys, here is JaxZ4 roof thread -

http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=40941&hilit=Roof&start=15

I wasn't sure his was dyed, so went looking... Turns out I was right - it was a whole new roof, not sure of the price.

I think to dye it would take some effort and lots of care, perhaps even require removing the whole thing which is not a small job in itself... Though Ben g did dye his grey one black so may be able to help a with some 'how-to' advice.

as bing said, i dyed mine using renovo reviver. it was 'grey' from factory, but had turned more green and no amount of cleaning would bring the original colour back.

it's an easy product to apply, but it can also be very messy as it's water based.
