If you change the oil before the service date will it have any bearing on the
miles to service indicator (ie will it be reset). :?

Nope, you have to reset the service indicators yourself using the two buttons on the gauge cluster. I posted the sequence somewhere on this forum, I'll have a look.

Ere ya go.

1. Ignition in the off position.
2. Push and hold the trip reset button while turning the key to position "1" or Accessory.
3. Continue pushing the button for 5 additional seconds until the display changes and "inspection" or "oil service" appears.
4. Push the button again for approx 5 seconds until " Reset " or "RE" appears in the display and is flashing.
5. When the display starts to flash press the button a third time to actually reset that item. The new or updated service should appear and you can now shut the key off.

It's worth mentioning that on item 5 you just press and release the button rather than press and hold.

If you don't get it first time persevere, sometimes it seems to takes me a couple of attempts. No idea why though.

Cheers Curtis  was not sure if it was like the merc set up where the harder you drive the quicker
the service miles come down.

Yes it is. The type of driving governs the interval to the next indicated service. In fact IIRC correctly if you are late with one, then you pay the penalty of having the next one automatically shortened by the computer. Perhaps slightly different to your original question that of course you can simply reset the indicator anytime you wish, regardless.

cj10jeeper, still a bit :? is the BMW the system the same as the Merc?
so if i change the oil will that slow up the mileage drop.

No, interval will only change if you reset the counter. The car is not quite smart enough to know when the oil has actually been changed,,,,,,,yet. :P
I will also add on the bit about the rate, which is determined on your driving style. Drive it hard, and the interval will be shorter. Drive it like Granny, and the interval will be longer. Hopefully that answers your questions :)

I thought there was a sensor that measured how clean the oil is, and it uses that to assist in setting the intervals :scratchhead:

The computer just measures fuel used using injector duty etc and deducts this from a value of fuel usage equivalent to 16000 miles normal driving.

If you cane the car and hence use more fuel the miles to next service comes down quicker :)

Right - based on how much fuel is used. I suggest not resetting in between intervals if you have any BMW paid service left in your warranty.

Still recovering from the wrist injury - tried last week to no avail - hope all is good to go next weekend.

Ah right, must be Audi that use the oil sensor, definitely one company that does.

Interestingly, Mercedes now started to stop the variable servicing and go back to fixed intervals, 12 months or 15k miles, must have been having too many warranty claims due to lack of servicing maybe?

Porsche now have a 20k service interval or two years... I'd never leave the oil that long in a performance car.

I woudn't leave it that long in any car. I guess the idea of the manufacturer is to have it hold together long enough to get through the warranty period.
