Central Locking from key

Hi All,

I have owned a few BMW's and the Z4 is the only one that when I either lock/unlock the car I have to pretty much next to it. Previous BMW's I could be around 40 feet away and it would work, hence the interior lights coming on to help find your car in a carpark??

Any ideas???

Snap - 30-40 metres plus although the auto top down will only operate from about 15 metres.

Mines exactly the same, need to be only a few feet away for it to work. Even with the new key I bought.

Wonder if it's different between coupes and roadsters. Anyone know where the sensors are?

Need to be fairly close to my Roadster, 5 meters maybe. Seems like even closer for the trunk release and top down, but maybe that's because you have to hold the button down?

Yes you do have to be fairly close compared to some cars, the worst is in Tescos car park where I sometimes have to try it 5 times before it works, interferance from radio waves or something?

Thats spooky. i had the very same problem at my local Tescos Friday. Had to press the remote button several times before the doors would open. Never had this issue before and has been fine since.

I always get this problem if I park close to the entrance, must be something transmitted from tescos that interferes with the central locking transmitted from the key fob. I had the same problem with my old MR2 which also did it at my Dad's house. I have herard that cordless dorbells, and house alarms can interfere with it as well

Had the interferance prob myself when in France had to go right up to the car to get it to open.

The doorbell thing is true opening your car can set the doorbell off

Have you tried the TOP GEAR - Clarckson trick of holding the key against you head/brain when you are some distance from the car. IT WORKS - but probably because you have just raised the height at which you press the button on the key :D

No problems on mine and I can 'blip' 3 times and have the hood almost down by the time I finish walking to the car.

Since they seem to vary so much it must be some from of interference, be that external signals or something blocking the reception in the car.

I believe there is a difference between coupe and roadster. Roadster seem to work from a distance while coupes do not!

That would not surprise me with the roof adding a shield that the canvas does not. Given the Zed started as a roadster I doubt they tuned the locking to match the coupe
