Cayman GTS mini review

Had the opportunity to drive one of these at the weekend on some great roads (a809 out of Glasgow off to Killearn then up to Aberfoyle and a jaunt over the Dukes Pass).

It was quite good but not amazing. It wasn't brutally quick despite the fact i've been stuck driving a diesel Xsara Picasso for almost a year now. With the PSE activated it sounds awesome outside but from inside it's not THAT loud and almost drony rather than the lovely high pitched rasp that can be heard outside. At constant motorway speeds the noise got quite annoying and the lovely crackles and pops on the over run that you hear on the videos just sound like worn bushes in the rear when you're actually in the car. For an NA engine the spread of power is very even. PDK obviously helps and it's a system that is difficult to fool. If I had one criticism of PDK it is that it can be slightly to eager to kick down and therefor often encourages you to add points to your licence.

Would I buy one? It would depend on the cost of ownership equation (basically how much comes out your pocket to own and maintain the thing). I suspect it would be more than an M235i or any of the comparable hyper hatches that are about these days and I felt the car wasn't massively better than any of those that i've experienced. In fact, I felt the GTS suffered from many of the same failings in terms of lifeless steering and an almost limited character due to an unshakeable chassis. I dare say the last 10/10ths is where the Porsche shines compared to those cheaper alternatives.

Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures as the only possible time to do this was while my friend was driving. He drives like a nutter and I was too terrified to take my eyes off the road.

You're probably better off taking his word though. He knows much more than me and is at least a millions times more accomplished as a driver :D

I always like hearing real world reviews of porches because I feel that the usual reviewers have a severe soft spot for them. Take the z4m and similar aged boxster. Where as some reviewers mark the bmw down to a 3-3.5 for having a stiff ride and being cramped, the same reviewers give the boxster 4.5 or 5/5 despite the miserly standard equipment levels and lesser performance/power. All because it's ''cheap for a porsche'' The same people go on to give the TVR T350 a lower score yet the only negative mentioned was 'high running costs'

I'd buy a GTS over a GT4 just based on it having PDK......and yes the GT4 is meant to be amazing, but I can't go to a manual from an auto

I will be sure to post up my thoughts on the GT4 if/when my friend gives me a shot of his. His deposit was down before the car was officially announced. As part of that deal he has been given the opportunity of trading the Cayman GTS for a 991 GTS so it will be going shortly.

In terms of the PDK, I've never found it any more outstanding than the VAG dual clutch offering (same thing anyway I suppose). It was difficult to fool unlike the 7 G Mercedes I drove recently which was the most dim witted box I've ever encountered. The box did have a tendency to kick down a little too eagerly meaning if you left it in auto you found yourself wringing the cars neck a lot. The box also likes to sit cruising quite high up the revs, presumably so it's sitting in the power band, the trouble is that this can make it drone.

I will say that the speed with which my friend hurled the car round the dukes pass wouldn't have been anywhere near in a manual. It's simply not possible to focus that much on where you're placing a car on a road that tight while changing manually. On the flip side I drove a manual boxster spider a few years back and the silky smoothness of that box is something I still dream about today. It was so perfect.

if your mate gets a GT4 after placing a deposit shortly after it was announced id be shocked..... people have had their deposits in for 6+ months for this car, from what I've been told by the dealer their was very little chance ( basically no chance) of getting on after it was announced.

Thanks for the mini review, I'm not sure if the pops and crackle will annoy after a while

Is that the same friend that binned his 911 on the motorway a few years back?

I said before the car was officially announced, not after. His deposit was placed in September before anyone knew full details. When he bought the GTS he was just desperately looking to get out of that M4. The salesman he always uses at Porsche showed him the GT4 on the system because he knew he'd be interested having owned ever GT3 and GT3 RS through the 996, 997 and 991 generations. He took the GTS as part of the deal on the GT4. They even paid for him and the sales manager to go to Geneva for 2 days to see the car.
