Cayman 718 S

I have ordered a Cayman 718 S and they are expected to arrive some time in September this year

Need some advice from those who have transitioned from Z4 to Porsche ownership. Not saying this is a step forward nor slating my current 35is in any way at all. Thundering machine which commands much respect which I will sell on in a few months hopefully to a forum member.

The 6 pot to 4 pot argument with the 718 will rage on for years to come I'm sure but I am no politician on this. Just fancy a change. Forgive me. Any advice on the following would be really appreciated.

1. Colour- sounds odd? I've been a follower of differing shades of grey for many years but now I feel a change is due. Do I go for classic solid yellow or red or go for some of the new lava orange or Miami blue- latter colours are pricey though ?
2. Extras- all are painfully expensive. I have chosen PDK and have been advised the sports chrono pack. Is there any other tips on extras which some consider absolutely necessary on these cars?
3. Finance- would love to be a cash buyer but sadly don't have that much just lying around so I am going for a finance package. Porsche have their own finance products but has anyone used any other finance providers?

Miami Blue with the 20" Turbo Wheels looks good, but as you say the price will rapidly start to get silly with the Porsche options.

I think I would still consider the current GTS as an option though.

More importantly - you do realise that the roof doesn't come off a Cayman don't you?

Have you scratched the itch in terms of open top motoring now?

I love grey cars, they're stylish and classy looking and look awesome when clean. Blue is doing the rounds at the moment as the 'new silver' so it depends on how long you want to keep the car for. Red Porsche's always look good though.

Sports exhaust is a must

The extras book is the biggest I have ever seen for a car, and it took me a while to decipher it all. 3 way seats, 6 way, 9 way, 18 way - that is just for starters

Type of mirrors, type of steering wheel and the list goes on and on.

You need to check the packages, as things like satnav and Blue Tooth are all part of those - rather than check the boxes individually.

20" wheels were my no1 choice and a must as the smaller ones look lost. The Alcantara sports steering wheel is a thing of beauty and the sound package is good.
I love the Carmine red, but it's very pricy (about £1,500 I think) dark blue metalic is very nice too.
Im pleased with my Agate grey and it looks bronze in certain light and looks classy without being too flash.

I'm told the roof does come off but not in the physical sense! Been driving a 'lid-off' car for over ten years now and you know what, if I still had my devilishly good looks as I did then it would be a no brainer 8)

Mmmmmmm.... Miami Blue with 20" wheels..... certainly a serious temptation Red seems to be the purist choice and I must admit that this has been on my mind. Problem is that there is a carmine red which possesses some subtle hints of purple..... another bleed me dry choice!!
Lava orange reminds of the old VW Beetle.

What a gorgeous pleochroic grey (flash word huh?). That is certainly an assault on my sense of desire! Brings on memories of spectacular electrical storms in Queensland. Thanks for posting pics! BTW, wheels look 'lush' as well. Were they a special order??

I took a Cayman for a test drive recently. The handling on these in my books is off the scale. The car just seems to move whichever way you lean, weird I know but that's what I got.

Did you go PDK/sports chrono or manly manual?

Wheels are 20" Carrera S platinum finish.
I have got the PDK but didn't get the crono pack as I don't think it would be useful on our roads and I'm not going to track mine.
I went for Agate grey as its my daily as I think the brighter colours can be a bit "look at me in my Porsche".....although I do think Carmine red is really nice.

The handling and balance is fantastic (better than a 911 ) and the brakes are unbelievable, you'll see what I mean when you get your Silverstone track day invite.

I spent some time in this brothel like interior yesterday (why is everything red .... ), and on previous occasions I have had the Cayman S so just a few points regarding these:

- Handling - Great, it is a narrow body car compared to my 911 so is much easier to get through narrow roads. Having relative small tyres, it also is not a stone collector like mine.

- The last car had the PDK, the first one the manual. The PDK is the "small" version of the Porsche gearbox as this is only the 6 speed version. The gearbox is better than the Z4 version but still not providing the real driving feel. I still find it odd that the car is in 4th gear by the time I get out of a roundabout.

- If I compare engine, I would say that the Cayman S is like the Z4M, and the Cayman is like the Z4 2.5. The Z4 3.0si feels a lot quicker, the standard Cayman struggles a bit on the power front.

- Sport Plus; On the PDK version, this was a right royal pain as it kept the revs around 6k the whole time. On the manual, you decide the revs of course and the gear selection and just benefit from the other aspects of Sport Plus.

- Comfort Access. Useless as you still need the key on you as well as the tracker fob. You just don't open the door with the key but straight at the handle.

- Seat cooling; Weird feeling to get cold air in your back. Would not order that.
- Auto folding mirror - nice touch.
- Seats - be careful there, I could not get comfortable in the ones from yesterday. There are so many different seat options but the ones from the car yesterday were not great. I think these were the 9 way seats.
- Rear view camera; I like that in my X5, but could not get them for the 911. Good quality camera as well.
- PDC; I do like the fact that on all Porsches they work all the time, so when you have to get between parked cars to let oncoming cars through, you still get the warnings.
- 20" wheels. They looked good, the ride in the Cayman is much harder than the 911 though (also on 20").
- Sport exhaust - really a must, sounds great.
- Start / Stop system. Bit of a pain with a PDK as unlike the manual, if you know you are going to stop for literally 2 seconds, you keep the clutch down. The PDK version will stall, and you lose a vital bit of time when you are at a roundabout wanting to get away quickly. You can switch the auto start / stop off with a button though.

My choice would always be to get the 'S' and lose some of the extras that this car had.
