Caught speeding - 102mph in a 70

Had a nightmare, policeman was parked on a slip road and caught me fly past - apparently at 102 although I couldn't say for certain.

I was served an NIP at the time, 3 weeks ago today, and told just to wait for the post to come through explaining what the crack is. He said anything more than 96mph was a court date - so expect that. I know I've got 6 months until I could be 'in the clear' in the hope that it doesn't get processed in time, but I won't hold my breath.

The officer was on patrol on his own, caught me using a radar gun and followed me with cameras, which won't show me speeding because I was off the gas as soon as I went past the slip road. I was super compliant with the officer, we actually got on really well and had a good chat. He even apologised to me saying 'I've probably ruined your weekend here' although I replied 'no officer, you're just doing your job, I've ruined my own weekend.'

A ban will cost me my job so I was wondering - 1) what are the chances of the officer not processing it - particularly after we got on so well? (any ex-bobby's on here?)

2) When/ if it goes to court with a ban pending then I'll have to lawyer-up instead of pleading guilty via post - I can't just let myself lose my job, I'd need to defend myself and try and get points/ increased fine. Any idea how much the lawyer and court fees could cost? (I'll get saving now)

No preaching here we have all done silly speeds and broken the limits in our cars. Well accept for JonnyEssex who when he does drive his car gets a windscreen full of soot as a diesel is quicker  Unfortunately, No chance he will file in the bin.

You will be looking at a hefty fine c£500-1k and around 5/6 points or worst case a short ban. If it matters for your job you should hire a good lawyer to attend and speak on your behalf. He will plead about what a geat person you are, never been in trouble before (unless you have?!), moment of weakness and you rely on your license for work and will lose your job. Buy the best you can afford again c£1k all in.

I got caught for doing 102.8 and it went to court, I got 5 points and £360 fine.
This was a while ago and I had a clean licence so don't know how this will compare.

If you have a clean licence i would doubt very much you would receive a ban , if you already have 9 points then its not gonna end well
A pal was taken to court for 108mph & received £500 with 9 points onto his clean licence

I must be old fashioned...the OP was caught speeding, which he has admitted to and IMO should just accept what the court dishes out and move on.
This hiring a lawyer to try and get you off is a no-no in my book.

And PGardner, I do feel your pain. I've been caught speeding twice in the past year.....SAC first time and a £100 fine and 3 points for the 2nd.

And please, I'm not preaching to you just offering a different opinion and hope you don't come out of this too badly. Good luck.

I think if he was going to be 'kind' to you he would have dropped the speed on the ticket.

Ive known this happen in the past with a ex gf's dad. He was caught about 110 and the police guy dropped the speed down to below 100 as he knew a ban was possible.

Outcome of speeding seems to vary dramatically..

When I was on a speed awareness course, there was a 19 year old lad who got caught doing over 100mph on the motorway and all he got was a slap on the wrist and had to do the course. Then there was me, caught doing 43 in a 30 and only JUST got given the course instead of a fine & points..

Seems when it comes to this kind of thing, the law is whatever they decide it is at the time!! You could be lucky.. You could be very unlucky. Either way, I'd prepare to get a lawyer as anyone driving a slightly nice car tends to get the book thrown at them!

:fuelfire:

If you job depends on the ability to drive then when it goes to court you should be ok.

I know someone caught over 110... With 5 points on their licence.

Got 9 points and huge fine but kept their licence with 14 points!!

But not by that much, perhaps I'm a law abiding citizen.

Hopefully no ban for the OP but certainly needs to attend some sort of speed awareness course or contain themselves.

Sorry, these kind of threads bug me

Bit harsh though. The guy has already admitted he was in the wrong. But to lose his job, possibly a house, wreck his marriage etc in the process for one silly mistake that if it can be avoided by spending a few quid on a solicitor, then why not. Your whole life shouldn't be turned upside down from what is a relatively insignificant error in judgment and i expect anyone in the same position would do the same.

OP - Not much i can offer in the way of advice except to turn up smartly dressed and kiss some arse, and i hope you come out of this ok.

Both the same % over BUT and I don't know the road you were driving on - 43 in a 30 is pretty silly...

Not old fashioned just not thinking straight would be more appropriate. He has admitted it but by not being represented properly could end him with a far worse out come. Not being prepared, bumbling, the court not liking his beard/haircut, etc etc

Look whatever happens and I pray it goes in your favour. It is an awful thing to happen and to most of us ordinary folk who don't joyride the streets high on drugs and alcohol killing people and seem to get away with it, you were in the wrong place at the wrong time and probably just taking advantage of some open road. I have exceeded speed limits countless times and I challenge anyone who can categorically say they have never done this.

Fingers crossed for you.

Cheers

Nothing wrong with my thinking...just offering another opinion which is what I think the OP was looking for.

As I said before OP, good luck and hope you don't come out of this too badly.

Of course there is. If you are not an expert, you buy an expert, in this case a motoring lawyer. Same as I am not an expert in servicing my own car but I want it done correctly so will take it to the expert at the garage. HTH
