After searching for quite a long time, I bought this in the summer as my first RWD sports car. The spec on it is about as extreme as you can get with bolt-on parts, which together with the way it looked was what drew me in. The previous owner told me that all of the modifications were made by the guy he bought it from (2x owners before me).
As a petrolhead I understand the cat D (non-structural) marker will put most people off, hence getting it out there early. The guy who did all the mods has been in touch & said it was written off due to front & rear damage, but that he went through it all & fixed everything properly. All of the panels on this era of Z4 aside from the roof are bolted on, so replacing them eliminates damage. I'm a car geek & mechanical engineer by trade, & couldn't find anything wrong. It drives beautifully too, which isn't possible to achieve if the chassis or any other suspension/steering component is bent.

I have a pile of invoices/receipts for the car, but was told the insurance company kept the service book when the car was written off, & the aforementioned previous owner who modified it kept some of the upgrade receipts to claim against his business. I serviced the car just after I bought it (@ 68k miles), & it runs beautifully. Here's the full spec of mods:

280bhp Superchips remap with speed limiter removed £300
Single mass flywheel & fast road clutch, approx £750
Scorpion stainless resonated cat-back exhaust £833
Polybushed (front wishbones, both arbs, rear trailing arms, bottom/top rear shock mounts, inner camber arms, inner control arms, rear subframe bushes), £700ish
Height/damping adjustable GAZ gold coilovers, £1k
Genuine BBS CH 19" x 9.5" rear & 19" x 8.5" front wheels, these are £2k new
Quaife ATB diff, £1100 ex fitting
Willwood 381mm discs & 6 pot calipers, this kit was £3k!!
Adjustable camber arms £110
Laser aligned (hunter) to e46 M3 CSL specifications. £125 The only difference between this & the CSL is that the CSL has 2degrees more caster on the front. This can be solved using different wishbone bushes apparently.
Window tints
Weighted machined stainless spherical gear knob with correct H-pattern engraved in the top, apparently this improves the shift. I can’t comment on whether this is true, but I like the look & it feels great in the hand.
The previous owner also replaced all of the badges with Alpina items. I kept them as they look cool, but also because one of my best mates is a BMW purist & he hates them!
Insurance wise, it cost me £550 for the year fully comp with all mods declared through Adrian Flux. That's with 2yrs no claims discount & 3points on my license.

In addition to the oil service, I've done the following work:
Retrofitted cruise control
Added a bluetooth phone/audio module which is connected to the aux port on the stock head unit. Mic for the phone is at the top of the A-pillar.
Replaced the weak oem rear top mounts with Powerflex items
Fitted the adjustable camber arms to correct the massive negative rear camber which wrecked the previous tyres
Laser alignment
Two new rear tyres (Uniroyal Rainsports all around)
MoT'd 1st November
Deep cleaned the interior & treated the leather
Fully detailed the exterior inc 2x stage paint correction & finished with ceramic coating. The paint reflects beautifully now & feels like wet glass to the touch :-)

Bad points:
This is a 15yr old black car. The front end & normal stone chip hot spots are peppered. There are general light scratches around the car.
The front wheels have some minor kerbing & a couple of areas where the paint has lifted - haven't had time to get them refurbed.
Front bumper has quite a lot of stone chips & the paint has cracked just to the left of the number plate (see pic). The LH side skirt has a small indent from what appears to be a misplaced jack, along with a small blistered patch of paint from a heat gun related accident (which was my fault) & a 20mm x 5mm section where the paint has chipped off towards the back of the panel (again my fault).

Other things to be aware of:
The ride is firm thanks to the coilovers & polybushes
When it's cold (say below 10 degrees outside) the clutch is a little grabby when you first set off
If you don't like attention or enjoy chatting to random petrol heads, this is not the car for you.

Good points:
Look at it. It's a very sexy car, & the reaction to it is always positive.
It's faultlessly reliable
It's fast
It handles brilliantly. The Quaife diff gives it great traction, turn-in is wicked sharp, & understeer is a foreign concept to this car!
It has the best interior spec - brushed aluminium trim, no sat nav (cleaner lines), & heated red leather sports seats. A genuinely lovely place to sit - I've been to Birmingham & back in it, & my sis borrowed it for her honeymoon to Scotland in the summer. Long distances are not a problem.
The brakes on it are immense!
Two keys
Rev matching on downshift is super easy with sport mode on & sounds lush
Everything on it is now sorted.
Handbrake is good (unlike most Z4s)
Backup sensors, electric mirrors & autodim rear view mirror work perfectly
With the way it drives & beautiful interior spec it feels special.
Look at it again. It's better in the flesh.

So why am I selling it? Because I've decided I prefer 4wd cars, & this is my only vehicle - I miss having a back row of seats! I'm by no means in a rush to sell though, & have a strong offer on the table from a mate who has wanted to buy it from me since I got it. So please save us both the time & don't bother if you're thinking of low-balling me.

I don't mind test drives from genuinely interested buyers, but I will need to see proof of funds & fully comp insurance first. This is to filter out the tyre kickers, dreamers & test pilots who want to know how an lsd car drives, at the expense of my time & money.

I think that's everything, but have probably missed some minor details. Feel free to ask questions, viewings are welcome.

Payment by bank transfer only.

Hi Ben,
Doesn't seem like your pics are working for some reason?
However, I would like to say that I have recently seen this car when Ben brought his bother-in-law up to buy my 2.5si.
The car looks awesome to me, and is a very high spec.
I think the front end stone chips are a figment of Ben's imagination as the bodywork looked nigh on immaculate.
I can only assume that after following JJ home for 170 miles he realised the tin top was not the right choice. :poke: :D
GLWTS mate.

Haha, hi Martin! Thanks for the kind words, was really nice meeting you & the drive home was fun :D

Re pics, I used the image button & pasted the gdrive links in as instructed. Have found gdrive to be quite fickle in the past tho, any ideas how to make the links work?

I can’t see the pictures either, suggest you repost and attach them directly if possible.

The asking price would probably be about right for a regular E86 on that mileage, so it’s a question of whether the extra goodies will make up for the Cat D and absent service history. I suspect the Forum is not the place to sell this car (it’s a fickle audience), although you may get some interest in the bolt-on parts.

GLWTS

It certainly looks like a great E86 in the photos.

I don't know if it would help to say when it became a Cat D - I'd certainly be less concerned if it happened recently than if it happened when the car was only a few years old.

Anyway GLWTS.

The previous owner Scott (the guy who sold it to the guy I bought it from) who fitted all the go-fast parts contacted me through my ebay advert & said it was written off in 2015. He bought it after it had been repaired, but wasn't happy with the standard of workmanship so replaced the LH rear quarter panel & had the new paintwork re-done. So the guy I bought it from must've been the one who booped the nose (see pic). Scott is a true petrolhead & said the s85 v10, wiring loom & e90 m3 manual gbox he bought for the z4 were still sitting in his garage. He also asked if the car still had the modified Supersprint exhaust manifold on it, but sadly the previous owner replaced it with a stock item. Guess he must've sold it separately to generate some extra cash.
