As per the title. Asda are doing 4l of 5w30 C3 Castrol Magnate for £23 quid... but is it any good for an N52 3.0l (that's done 105k miles)?

It does meet LL04 spec.

Any experience/opinions welcomed!

Yep that’s absolutely fine. It meets the spec and it’s what I have seen some Indy’s use as well. :)

Wouldn't fall for any of the intelligent magnetic molecule gimmicks and Magnatec has only very recently been classified as a fully synthetic in Germany (I remember when it wasn't classed as fully synth here as well). They didn't change the formula but the base stocks were reclassified so they can now get away with it being mixed GIII (just plain old hydrocracked natural oil) and GIV (fully synth) base stocks.

Fuchs, Motul, Millers are REAL fully synthetics but you can't really go wrong at £23

Cheers guys

£46 for an oil change with some left over for top ups. It is a tempter.

Going to do a full-on service soon (think inspection 2 plus a few bits), which is going to tot up to quite a considerable sum... so could do with saving a bit.

Basically it's this or the Fuchs Titan GT1 stuff from Opie Oils. 2x5l for £46.99.

Hmmm...

I would say that the oil should be fine its the period between changes which is important. Change the oil every 5 - 6000 miles rather than manufactures spec (which is max mileage) and you should have a happy engine.

You can get 10 litres of decent oil for that  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MILLERS-TRIDENT-LONGLIFE-5W30-FULLY-SYNTHETIC-PERFORMANCE-ENGINE-OIL-5L-5999GO/263845190486?epid=646840422&hash=item3d6e661b56:g:gqAAAOSwJ0xaVN4d

Yes, and these are all the same sort of thoughts I was having. What I can't get my head around is how the Castrol Edge 0w30 and 5w40 are LL04 and the 5w30 isn't. Yet the Magnatec 5w30 is.

I'm pretty good with understanding most things car related, but oil is like some sort of witch craft I'm destined never to truly understand!

I'm thinking the Fuchs is the way to go.
