I've wanted to get carplay installed in my Coupe for a while and have been searching online for any photos of similar installations so I could get an idea of what it could look like. I'm not really a fan of the chinese radios so I wittled it down to the Sony XAV-AX8050D which is a floating screen type, and the Pioneer AVH-Z7200DAB which is a motorised flip out screen. I was initially set on the Pioneer, but it always niggled me that in it's resting state the actual radio looked to stick out quite far and looked a bit...90's? Also the Pioneer had a lot of cables hard wired to the rear of the unit that looked to be a pain to manage. The Sony looked like a cleaner install but I couldn't find any pictures of it installed in a Z4...which is understandable i guess.
I flipped and flopped in my mind but today seeing Halford had a 10% of deal and had the Sony in stock for immidiate collection, I went for it. So below are a bunch of photos that hopefully will help anyone else who is thinking of installing this Radio, now or in the future, on how it looks.
It was a very straight forward install, pretty much plug and play with an ISO adaptor and DAB antenna which you need to buy extra. It took me about one and a half hours to get it all nicely installed and the good thing is the cables are very minimal in number, there is plenty of space. I am very happy with the results, I was worried that the screen would be too big and "in your face" but it is just right, the vents are covered there is such a gap that they can still blow air up or to the sides with no problems at all, the heater controls are all easy to use as you can adjust the position of the screen before you lock it all down.
For reference my car had the standard buisness radio, so no amp etc to worry about. The audio is really good from this Sony, certainly good enough for me but I am no audiophile. Anyway, hopefully this post will help others..
Now, some pics.
