Carbon Fibre Dashboard

My Z4 has a standard brushed aluminium dash and centre transmission tunnel piece - the latter is quite scuffed by previous owner. The standard ali tunnel part is £200 ouch!

Three questions:

1. Has anyone replaced this strip themselves - is it an easy job or a real pain?

2. The BMW black piano lack alternative looks good but is it durable given the marks the ali part has (and I've seen the same on several cars)?

3. A good quality carbon fibre replacement would look real cool - transmission tunnel and dashboard but does anyone supply this?

1. Yes see below...

srhutch changed his to carbon leather... :sweetheart:

There is a write-up here that JackB1 did too. plowy also did it too but his pics have gone, although maybe if you PM'd him he'd still have them.

2. IMHO is will mark more easily and always have fingerprints on it, but it does look very nice, much better in real life too, pics dont seem to look so good because of the contrast with the rest of the dashboard.

3. carbon leather is best, much better bet than trying to source aftermarket CF - if you can get hold of it cheaply enough.

Would go for the carbon leather as would think its the easiest one to keep scratch free and it looks very nice i think you can polish scratches out of carbon not 100% sure on that one.

As wondermike said, I have done this recently, it's not difficult but takes a few hours, the dashboard can be done very easily with just the air vents and radio needing to be removed.
The Centre console requires more work and there are 27 screws (from memory) that hold it on from below, so requires the rear centre panel cover where the CD Changer are to be removed followed by removing the centre console.

I think your only option here is to apply a carbon film, but personally dont think it will look right.

My carbon trim was £180 from ebay, got it cheap I think as it was buyer collects, which limits your market. Your other options would be to get another set of trim sprayed black and lacquered, which should give the same effect as the Piano Black, or go for the same colour as your car. (this has been discussed somewhere on here recently)

If you want anymore info or help when you come to do it drop me a PM

a local friend of mine wrapped his z3 dash with genuine carbon (not fake film)....not sure of the cost but he sent it away and had it returned in a few days.

pablo, that looks very nice indeed. I'm sure the Z4 would be more expensive because the surface areas are larger, or doesn't it work like that :idunno: I think I still prefer the matt effect of the carbon leather, but I'll reserve the right to change my mind if 1340fxd does the full carbon shiny bit :)

i think that cost him £150???? its not a firm that did it but a member of a bmw forum i think. however there is a company in the sw called kick ass carbon i think and they do allsorts including roof and bonnet carbon wrapping, i think they are very reasonable also.

the z4 dash isnt as intricate as the z3 with all the binacle holes etc so the price might not be too bad. if anyone is interested ill enquire with my friend for contact details etc.

personally, removing the center console piece is what turned me off on the project (hell of a job to remove from what I can gather)

The reflection was one reason I was glad to get the leather, the standard Aluminum could be a bugger with the roof down and the sun behind you, I'm guessing Pioan black and the real CF would be the same.

As said before though, it's not a hard job to change, but takes 4-5 hours unless you know somebody who has done it before and knows all the tricks.
