Car scraped in car park - contact details left - what next?

Got back to my car yesterday and there was a note left to say "I scraped your car please call me on xxx"

Tried the number a few times last night and it rang out, eventually I got a text saying "let me know the cost of repairs and I will pay"

The damage looks like it will require a new alloy and a respray of the rear bumper

I'm going to phone them again today but what's the protocol here? Assuming it's not a scam, I guess I'm going to need several written quotes, presumably no need to involve legals/insurance at this stage unless they start to withdraw their offer?
 
Ask for their address and reg number ASAP. Sounds like they are genuine but cover yourself in case of a change of heart! Good luck.
 
Sounds ok to me. Not many people would leave there number. Some descent people about :thumbsup:
 
Get the full details first as many people think that a repair is like £50 or so.

When you tell them it is £1000 for paint and a wheel they suddenly stop communicating. Make sure you keep a record of ALL communications just in case that happens ...

+1 - mate had his boxter scuffed lightly on the bumper a week ago. The girl told security at the hospital. He's had a quote for 1800 and she has disappeared of the planet. Chase them instantly! His only lead is her name and that she is a first year medic where he works :-s

Get all their details ASAP as I guess they won't want to pay once they realise the costs involved to fix a BMW aren't cheap.

My view to. Otherwise they would leave a not with a false number, but any witness would think they have done the right thing.

95% of people these days (many not originating from here) would've drove off without a care.
 
I think most people are honest. I have left notes on two cars I have scraped and been left a note the time my saab was dented.

three out of three is pretty good.
 
My neighbour dinged the Z4 a couple of months back - at the time she came around to mention it.

First quote from in an independant body shop was £680, which was a shock to her, so I agreed to shop around. Eventually after buying used bits from eBay and getting a friend of a friend to remove the dent and do the respray.... I managed to get the bodywork done for £250 "cash" (I swallowed the £££'s for bits and the 2x taxi's I took to drop off and collect the car totalling another £73 on top).

She agreed to the £250 before I got the work done... but has subsequently not paid as I can't produce a receipt for a cash in hand deal.

For the most part I find people to be unreliable... but it sounds like you've been hit by one of the honest ones.
 
I hate leaving my car in places where the average joe parks his/her car. Most people view cars differently to us-> "bumpers are for bumping... right?"
 
Sorry to hear that your car got damaged. It's reassuring to know that there're some decent honest people around. Hope it all works out and your car is good as new soon.
