Car insurance to be investigated...

Just seen this in bbc news http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-19755037

Its amazing how they have only just figured it out.... back in 2007 i gave my dad my old compact 1994 316i to drive, someone hit him and the damage didnt look that bad it needed a new trim piece and bumper.. i could have sorted those parts for about 150 quid from Quarry motors. I thought well this is what insurance is for and let them handle it since it was completely the guys fault behind and to be honest he tried laying the blame saying my dad stopped at the lights to quick.... They then send a brand new 330i and made me sign a piece of paper saying it will cost 650 a week to rent if anything goes wrong with the insurance (was my insurance) ... E.g say they found points on your license undeclared or something it covers them I guess. I signed it thinking wow that is one hell of a fee the compact only worth 700 quid maximum! The repair took them 2 months to complete and they were in no rush to get it finished i was in communication with the repair centre as I was concerned they would not reattach a spoiler that was a 300 quid option id paid for in 2001... amazing. Car worth 700 quid and hire company costs = 5200 no wonder insurance is so high. They should bring down repair times with a penalty against margin if its not completed within say a month. They should also have a fleet of decent but not top end cars used as standard while a repair is being made across all insurance company only then will we see premiums reduced.

The guy who dings his ferrari and has to drive round in a 116i i am sure would welcome a huge reduction per year for those couple of weeks his car is away. The like for like replacement courtesy car system is silly IMO.

Had a bump a couple of years ago - i got a pug 107 to replace a 2.0 hyundai coupe - I agree cars should be like for like and insurance is far too expensive

No it's not. We were unlucky enough to have our car almost written off by a nobhead Pole HGV driver who was lost and decided to do an impromptu 'U' turn across four lanes of rush hour traffic. Anyway the car was a 7 seater Qashqai.

The damage was extensive and the car was away for around 6 weeks I think.

And the courtesy car they offered us? A peugeot 107 that would probably fit in the boot of the bloody Qashqai! Worthless to me and affected a camping trip we had planned.

Most people by cars that suit their lifestyle and you can't fit certain families and lifestyles into bloody tiny bloody Peugeot bloody 107s!

It made me angry that through no fault of our own we were going to be without our main car for weeks and the repairer's attitude was it's a 107 take it or leave it. I wanted to tell him to stick it up his ar$e. The irony is it would probably have fitted.

There I feel much better now. Thank you Z4 Forum.

The whole car insurance industry is a racket. This investigation is long overdue. I had an accident in my car last year (no other car involved). Since that accident i have lost count of the texts and phone calls I've had telling me i can claim compensation for this and that. Who do you suppose passed my details on?

We should go the same way as many other countries and 'insure the driver' and not the car

That does not make sense?

Other countries insure the car (no matter who drives it), that makes sense to me. Abroad, I drive in any of my friend's or family cars without worrying about insurance as the car is insured.

If someone gives me permission to drive the car, they take the risk that if I crash it, their insurance would go up.

Next time you get one of those calls do what I do and have a bit of fun with them, it works a treat.

Just say "Which accident is it you are referring to, as I have had a few?" They can't even tell you the date as they don't know any details so I then say "So you've rang me up and you don't even know what it is you want to talk about? You're not exactly inspiring me with confidence in your company, perhaps you should call back when have the correct information to hand."

Sometimes they are a bit more persistent and you have to finish by saying "I'm sorry but if you can't even tell me the date of the accident you want to talk about then I can't help you, goodbye."

Makes a valid point to them I think and gives me a laugh along the way.

My insurance policy in America was fairly typical. It's connected to you and your driving record AND the car you drive. I.E. While the 2006 zed is a sports car our 2004 Honda accord had a terrible record of being nicked. So policy cost was the same for both Also they DO NOT count accidents that are not your fault. Further more, As long as a driver has a valid driving permit and my permission they would be covered driving the zed. I have a clean driving record, Was 52 when I bought the zed and it cost 24 quid per month for full cover.

24 quid???? !!!! :o amazing... I have been paying 1000 GBP per year on average for the last 7 years, only this year has my premium reduced to 450 GBP it has gone from being in a secure locked underground car park with a guard to a driveway! Work that one out! it would seem judging the security of the car on postcode does not always make sense!

That all changed upon moving to Germany. Same car same driver. 875 quid per year. Of course the liability cover here (10 million euro) is huge. Granted, If one runs into a building in Europe. It just might be historic and very spendy to fix. In America, most buildings are wood and easily fixed and aren't so old as yours.

i would be pretty annoyed if my nice new expensive car got crashed into and they gave me a pile of rubbish to drive around.

There will always be companies who try to profiteer from claims....

Hope this does something to reign the values back in
