Car Hire Excess Insurance

I didn't know you could do this: take out separate insurance to cover car hire excess charges (CDW and the like) which is significantly cheaper than cover through the actual hire car company. You can get worldwide cover for a year for around £100.

I'm going to be hiring a car in the USA later this year and cover for the single trip would be £88 as compared to £100 for a years cover.

Has anyone got any experience of this separate cover?

I havent decided which one to go with yet - dont recognise any of the names of the companies :tumbleweed:

You don't necessarily have to recognise the name of the company offering the insurance, they're probably just agents or brokers and there are may thousands of such companies - when you talk to them ask who underwrites the policies as that's the important bit, even if the broker/agent disappears you just claim direct from the underwriting company.
