Can't upload avatar

Hi Guys

I'm trying to upload an avatar. I have cropped an image to 120 pixels by 120 but the avatar upload keeps saying that my image must be less than 11 kiB whatever that is. It says my file is 11.8 kiB (or something like that). The image I am trying to upload is 38 kB. If I compress this with the lowest quality it only comes down to about 31 kB and that looks terrible.

What am I doing wrong? Does the forum need a bit of educating?

try gif and look at the newbie threads. It kicked my butt for a while too (I was trying to load a jpeg and it just wasn't working)
