Can you recommend a speed camera detector that isn't Fugly?

Hi All,

I'm looking for personal experiences of members who own and operate a detector. I have owned a Road Angle in the past but sold it when i purchased a Tom Tom with speed camera capability a few years back. Now i have changed my car and have built in navigation i no longer use the Tom Tom (well you wouldn't would you?). so a few weeks in and you guessed it, got stung doing 35 in a 30. I have no idea why i had a brain fart that day, but i was in a location a long way from home and must have misjudged my speed. I'm normally extremely careful in 30mph areas, but without the help of Tom Tom i got caught. So "mea culpa".

strangely, a few years back i got a new car and the same happened :?

the detector needs to be GPS based, and not FUGLY! It's a 50 grand car for pity sake and i don't want something GD awful on the dash. small and cute would be nice.

I'n not super concerned about the cost, but i'm not Bernie Ecclestone!

Awaiting your replies, and before anyone starts on the "keep within the speed limit BS"............... :poke: i'v already owned up. Last poins for speeding were in 2001 8)

+1 on Mikes suggestions. They are the only two manufacturers with self updating databases. My old road angel connected is getting flaky and the three year subscription expired recently so I'm also looking for a replacement. The Gem is a lot smaller than the connected. iMO the snooper looks like you have a portable nav installed, also maybe not the image you'd want for your 50k car :?

You can get an app from both manufacturers for smartphones with a built in GPS, but reviews have not been good

If you can live without an LCD display it's great.

The speed camera data base is very good,

After my last experience with a snooper I'm never getting another one. It was awful and was nearly thrown out of the window

I'm in a similar situation to the OP myself, isn't there such a device that you could put underneath the dashboard but high up enough and near enough to the windscreen that it could still get a signal but so that it was not visible? Of course this would mean that it would be a pain to take out to update all the time so it would need to have a SIM card installed that could perform automatic updates, similar to the ones above but wouldn't need a screen as you would never see it, just so long as it was load enough to hear. Would also prefer one with a laser detector to pick up speed guns. Anybody heard of such a device??

No, I dont like this idea.

Realistically, I just want to get in the car and go. if i have to hang the Iphone on the windscreen it would be no different to hanging the TomTom that i already own on the screen.

Small, discreet, no wires, and not FUGLY are the criteria to work within.

I am taken with the PoGo Alert Plus as it looks compact and gets good write up.

But a bit pricy compared to the ones already suggested.
 
I have a 5 or 6 year old new road angle in mine... hardwired in the drivers side A pillar, hardly noticeable and does the job for me.
 
This is one of the reasons I use the TomTom over the in-built sat-nav :P

It also means I can add my own warnings as POIs as I go along, and update the camera database every week. Although I don't rely on TomTom's own camera info, I use the one from PocketGPSWorld.

Otherwise you can buy/create one of those doctored sat-nav discs to add the speedcam data - although I think it's just a visual warning.
 
I have an updated 2012 sat nav disc which gives speed camera warnings - visual and audible (even audibkle when the screen's folded away!). Ok, not as good as a snooper, but good enough to give that warning to check your speed.

To reiterate what geepee says, you can get good speed camera apps for an IPhone (and presumably other smart phones). Some are free, better ones cost a little, but are always with you if you have a phone.

I'd be interested to know more about this disc DR-Z. I assume that you also have the HDD navigation system like where from cost, process to load to the car as this is probably a very good way forward for me.

Obviously BMW could supply, but there are a number of Sat-Nav specialists who supply the latest DVD's including a self installing system update if it is required. See these guys [link removed] for instance.

It's a different system on the e89 compared to our e85/e86 models.

Although there are unofficially 'tweaked' copies of the newer ones available, none of them mention audible alerts.

If you care to look, you'll see that most of these 'sat-nav specialists' have a phrase buried on their website which says buying them is only legal if you own a copy of that map disc already :poke:
