Can watches have a soul?

Is it me or is there is something about watches? Maybe being physically attached to you for years, 'being there' for the highlights and tragedies, can a favourite watch become more than a timepiece?

I reckon so, I'm not as intimately connected to my old watch as the Butch's father was in Pulp Fiction but it's close. I bought my old Seiko 5 automatic in the late 70's and have worn it as my daily ever since yep 35 + years! It saw my first job interview, was there when I was nearly killed in a bike smash, wedding, kids birth, best holidays, family funerals and more. Dress watches have come and gone but the dammed thing kept going. But now it's starting to lose a bit too much time, like me it's getting knackered and will be retired to occasional use.

So what to repalce it with, another Seiko of course! and can't wait for it to arrive, this time a Titanium case & bracelet, Kinetic movement and sapphire glass, the sad thing is if it runs like the old one it will probably outlast me!

"he hid it in the one place he knew he could hide somethin'. His ass. Five long years, he wore this watch up his ass. Then he died of dysentery, he gave me the watch. I hid this uncomfortable hunk of metal up my ass two years. Then, after seven years, I was sent home to my family. Now, little man, I give the watch to you.

Nice post. An interesting point you've raised. In the throw away world of today how amazing to have something thats been alongside you for so many life milestones and still be with you. :)

Touches home with me.

At the start of the year my dad gave me my grandpas seiko 5. I remember sitting on my grandpas knee when he would visit on Thursday nights and I remember the watch. It must date back to the 70s, it doesn't keep great time any more but with a seamaster, a planet ocean and a Carrera sitting in a drawer the Seiko is the only one that matters to me.

I still have my grandfathers watch - he bought it in the 1940s, needs winding up :). Also have my fathers from the 1960's - a Seiko he bought when serving in Singapore . Both have a lot of sentimental value to me, but don't get worn.

My watch...... Well, never wear one as my phone tells me the time if I need to know :)
