Camera recommendations

I know there are some keen photographers on here...

I'm looking for a simple Compact Digital Camera for about $150 to £200. It will mainly be for holiday snaps.

My first Digital about 9 years ago was a Canon Ixus which I thought was very good at the time but it died a long time ago. I've had various cameras since, most recently a Pentax that cost about £120 which I've pretty much given up on as the photos it produces are rubbish.

I've read a few reviews on the latest Ixus cameras, and get the general impression that they are now overpriced and more style over subtance.

So can anyone recommend a different camera or manufacturer in the price range I'm looking at ?

see if you can find anything in the Panasonic Lumix range. Well made with good sharp lenses.

The FS33 is within your range on amazon down from 190 to about 130'ish. Has decent size 3" lcd screen, and it is touch screen too, Decent digital aided zoom and 14mega pixels. Don't get too hung up on the mega pixles when looking though, unless you intend to blow up to mega sizes. If you are printing at Boots (8x6 or 5x7) or just looking on screen you can get away with a lot less that 14 mega pixels.
 
X2 I've had 3 Lumix cameras, all hand me downs from my Dad. all worked great and the last one I got is quite good. I just bought a Pentax K5 but I'm keeping the Lumix charged up as well. :thumbsup:

Hey ferrel

If you want a snappy digital camera that is more robust than the average cam and you fancy something waterproof I strongly recommend the pentax optio waterproof (wpi) range of cameras, been happy with these for snap shots for years, I have had a few of these and they are great for snaps and fantastic underwater. Good quality build and photos.

On your budget, if you don't want the waterproof option, I'd say the lumix is a great option, but I would recommend also taking a good look at the canon power shot too, i think it's worth the extra £50, but I am biased as I prefer a canon

on our side of the puddle tehere has recently been a simular discussion,the gyu went with a sony hx5v and was very pleased about it!
 
The wife had a TZ8 (lumix) for christmas. She says its excellent. Has a very good zoom for such a small camera
 
Are you sure you can't be tempted on a Canon Ixus? I have the Ixus 130 and it's a fantastic little camera!

Yep too late. I remember getting results like your photos from the first ixus I had back almost 10 years ago. But the most recent reviews seemed to suggest they had gone downhill. I guess you proved that wrong !

I think this Lumix will do the trick and it cost about the same as the Ixus 210 that I had been looking at. Just got to get myself over to the Caribeean now to start snapping,. ..there's not much very photogenic in South London (except me of course as PvR will confirm).
