Camera Detectors

Hi

Is it worth buying just to cover yourself these days, ie by the time you pay a fine for accidentally going to fast along with 3 years insurance hike are they almost something that pays for itself ...

Eh ? How about just not breaking the law in the first place, not sure how you would do it accidentally. Can't tell you how p*ssed off I get when people speed through the village at 40/50 mph this endangering the life of our children.

He was only asking a reasonable question, no need to get your knickers in a twist

I got 3 points for doing 33 mph in a 30 mph area a few years back and my speedo was reading 30 but still got a ticket, so have to correct you that it can be accidental. I take a bit of offence to your comments but put it down to the time of the month.

Not too sure why people need them? Roads have speed signs and drivers have eyes that by some bizarre twist of nature are connected to their right foot in some way or another. So when the road sign says 30 your eyes see it which tells ya foot which tells ya car resulting in 30mph and so on. :poke: :poke: If you are relying on a camera detector, it just emphasizes the fact that you are ignoring the speed signs and relying on a gizmo to tell you to slow down. :poke:

Sorry if i am on my high horse but observation, care and consideration are all free and will benefit you in more ways than a camera detector. :D

In the same way Cameras are always placed at accident blackspots and never at places where they can cream the most cash

Come on, its a reasonable question, I once drove a road nr Stoke on Trent more than one camera every mile in each direction, it was terrible because everyone was busy looking at the speedos not the road as a direct result

As I said, yours was a perfectly reasonable questions to ask. Obviously the question has angered the anti speed brigade on here.

Brian not sure if those comments were brave or stupid :o Have to say though, you may need your speedo looking at, your speedo could be upto 10% out at 70+mph but at 30mph it should show 30mph and i think that no one accidentally speeds, but just fails to observe the correct speed. :fuelfire:

Hmm anti speed brigade :headbang: Thats a statement that says alot really :poke: and that is all i am saying  :D

If the cap fits Rusky. So you know your speedo is 100% accurate do you, think not!

New tyres, worn tyres, increased or under infated tyre pressures can all have an effect on how fast the tyres rotate which is how speed is measured.

So there is no way that you can be always within the speed limit :poke: :fuelfire:

how does that work if one tyre is the correct pressure and not worn and the other is underinflated and worn? Would your speedo take the average?

Just a question? :D

I'm always wary of speed cameras/traps in the areas that have lower limits (i.e. 30/40mph limits) so stick to them (or trundle through below), but am quite happy to cruise at 80-85mph on motorways & NSL dual-carriageways.

Considering all this NIMBY-ism, when my mate in rural Essex ran a community speedwatch campaign (i.e. they were trained to use a speed gun, and the owners of the speeding vehicles were sent a little warning letter) the majority (70%) were 'locals'.

These are probably the same people who hold everyone up by driving at 40mph down the NSL single carriageway roads, then blast their horns and/or flash their lights if you dare overtake, and then carry on through the 30mph village limit at 40mph!

I don't think I've ever seen a Z4 being driving at 70mph or less on a motorway or NSL dual-carriageway. Do you drive at 70mph or less on these roads...truthfully now :poke:

In fact I think the only vehicles on the motorway travelling below 70mph are the trucks - so in this case the MAJORITY of drivers speed (accidentally or otherwise).

If people are really that worried about being caught speeding by a camera 'coz their speedos are not working, why not drive with a sat nav at all times that tells you when you are exceeding the speed limit.
Yes, I largely cruise on the motorway myself but never speed on other types of roads, mainly because I believe that the speed limits are there for a purpose. Nothing to do with being a NIMBY, If I get caught speeding on motorway then I will pay fine and take the points and not bellyache about it.
I am currently paying more for car insurance as husband for caught doing 35 in 30, and I am making him pay the extra, but again it's fair for him to be punished for something he could have avoided doing.

Ignoring all the stupid unhelpful comments ....

I have one and have had one for a few years, and I like it. Its gps based, it tells you the speed your going the speed limit and beeps if you are approaching a camera going too fast + it also keeps your average when you in average speed cameras

Obviously it only does fixed cameras and you need to update it regularly

It has saved me a few times, particularly on roads your not used too or for those hidden cameras

About a year ago I was going to upgrade to a snooper with a detector, I used it for about a month but it went back it was useless it beep at everything from traffic light sensors to thoses road signs that flashs up and you ended up ignoring it. So I personally think the gps based device updated weekly is the way to go,

Stupid..... In your opinion.

Absolutely i will make progress on roads that display the GLF sign but the question was about speed detectors and the point i made was that as a driver you have eyes and if you are driving with due care and attention then why do you need a device to tell you to slow down??
My driving is far from perfect as is most peoples but its always good to throw in different opinions to liven up the debate. :D

Its not very helpful is it

"Whay does everyone think about speed camera detectors?"

"Don't speed"

If every thread was as helpful this would be a great forum ...

And still no one has answered him, hijacked by liberal do gooders, yada yada yada.
My nephew has got one, he's 24 and drives fast and he has a clean licence, so apparently they work. Been in there and it does get on your nerves mind.
