CAI?

Anyone have any suggestions on what CAI to buy for the Z4?

I find the stock air box to dampen the sound a lot and I would like to get a CAI that allows me to really hear the roar of the I6.

I had a CAI on a 325 before and it completely transformed the sound of the car when you pinned the gas!!

I've been thinking about a CAI myself ... not for any real reason, just for something to do with the car.

But, it's always in the back of my mind ... what if it screws up the MAS. Theoretically, it shouldn't if you only replace the airbox and probably stick with a paper filter cone.

You might want to keep your eye on the BMW performance parts catalog ... the guys over at e90post scanned the catalog, and one item is a CAI for the 3-series, and they also have a pretty snappy looking short shifter. There are probably some experts on this forum, who may know if the 3-series CAI would fit the Z4, since their front-ends share many similar parts.

sorry if this is old news :(

flieger has a Streamline CAI. It is a true cold air intake with a very good filter. Streamline went out of business after some very shady business practice off the old Z4Um forum days. The next best thing is an AFE system or a Dinan unit. Will it give you 10-25 more ponies? Nope.

2006 + engines have a different intake box configuration and the MAF sensor is also integrated into the box making it more challenging to add a different CAI box.

You have only a few options for your 03 2.5l Z4 regarding a true CAI.

"Streamline Engineering" went out of business. However, the Streamline brand of filters is still available for select models and applications.

The Streamline panel filter will liven up the intake sound a little and much more economical then a CAI.

Just wanted to clarify that statement. :peace:

True, regarding Streamline Engineering. Thank you for the clarification.

I was attempting to answer his question regarding a CAI, of which you have none for a Z4.

True, I do not have a CAI for the Z4. Thank you for that clarification.

The OEM BMW intakes are pretty well designed as is. :peace:

If the OP wants to hear more engine noise, a performance muffler would suffice. Or for more extreme engine surgeory, headers and race cats.

I really do love my SE intake. It truely is a shame that it turned out the way it did for many involved. From time to time one comes up for sale. Keep your eye peeled. With the addition of the Eisenamnn race exhaust and removal of the foam piece from the SG I get all the sound I can use.

There is also GruppeM CAI.

I had a 2.5l, I could not cost justify any of the available CAI. I had, and was satisfied to have installed, a Streamline drop-in filter. You might want to give it serious consideration. It is much better than the K&N version and gives value for money.

i previously had a 325 with the same engine as the 2.5 Z4 and had a ECIS CAI and it worked great!! the sound of the 2.5 I6 with the CAI was AMAZING when you floored the throttle. noticeable difference in performance (for a CAI) at high speeds as the air going in thru the kidney grillz created a ram-air effect

i wonder if the ECIS CAI would fit on the Z4? i know that the way the air comes into the air box is different. the z4 has the air coming into the airbox from the front of the car, while the 325 had the air coming into the airbox from the passenger side of the airbox

so what i am saying is that the sound of the 325 with that CAI was leaps and bounds deeper and louder than the 3.0 litre Z4 (stock air box w/ K &N drop in) with the top down, both at full throttle

i just can't wait to hear what a 3.0 litre, at full throttle with CAI, with top down will sound like ... for sure it will sound MEAN!!!
