Buying a Z4(c) - My question thread!

Figured it best to post a new thread with a better title, so people might come in and help! :)

So, how does the servicing work? From what I've read, it needs servicing by what the dash tells you, but every 2 years, if it still has not had a service, it needs one. In addition to this, it also needs the brake fluid doing, right?

How long do tyres last?

Would not getting Nav really affect the car when I want to sell the car? I'm not keen on the Nav in the dash personally, as I feel it ruins the lines and just looks kinda 'plonked there' as an afterthought.

What issues should I look out for with the car? Looking at 56/07 Coupes.

What colour combos are generally the worst, and best to avoid? (I know this is sometimes subjective)

What options were standard on the 3.0si Coupe, and what were paid for? I'm getting contrasting info from everywhere. I have honestly tried to work it out myself.

What options can be (easily) retro-fitted?

I'm interested in the steering feel, as I've heard the non-M has poor steering feel. Has anyone come from something else to compare to; especially an MX5. I've had 2 MX5s, and loved the steering feel in those.

I think that's enough for now! :D

Welcome!

I have a 3.0si roadster. Engine is very smooth and powerful, you wont be disapointed.

I agree about the nav, it looks nasty and does ruin the lines.

Not sure what options are standard but mine came with heated/electric seats, bi xenon, carver hi fi, auto lights and wipers, cup holders and maybe other bits in bobs.

Steering feel is rather disapointing imo. i justs not weighted enough even in sports mode. My last car was a type r which had awesome steering. However there are a few mods that can be done so help the steering feel a bit more weighted.

Overall though its an awesome car but why are you getting the coupe, get the roadster, thats what the z4 is all about!

Hey, now, coupes rock!

I don't know what the "standard" coupe was on that side of the pond, here they were pretty well equipped. Mine has the sport and premium packages--it was loaded and had sat on the lot for a while-got a great deal. Here are some pics:

Jealousy and envy speaking here! A coupé is so much more practical in northern climates and better looking also.

Thanks for the answers so far. Steering being poor is a serious concern, since that is one the main reasons I'm changing car. Any other views?

Servicing is every 15000miles IIRC, Although there is a new condition based servcing which I'm not sure the Zed falls in but my mates 130i does and he needs it servicing depending on the condition of each part from what I understand!

Tyres can vary depending how you drive!!!

Sat Nav may or may not help a sale, I didnt look for a car with Nav originally, but fell on a car that came with it! TBH, looking at the prices, the Nav doesnt really help in price much either! If you dont like it then dont bother, end of teh day you need to live with it :)

Not sure about issues, but if you look at the "Problem" page I'm sure you'll get an idea ;)

Worst colour IMO, is a silver car with Blue/Black leather!!! Infact IMO the Blue/Black and Blue leather trim are the worst!!!

Options, nothing is standard in a Zed LOL! Hence why they are options!

There's loads of iPod Connectors out there that can be easily fitted, and cheaper than the BMW one too (I was quoted £300 for the BMW one), Cruise control can be easy enough (need to start cutting wires) but I've manged to live without it so didnt bother in the end! Cup holders are easy (you get them with the comfort pack, which includes, extended storage, parking sensors and multi function steering wheel), the comfort pack can you ordered as individual items so dont be suprised to find a car with just the multi function wheel...

I agree, test drive one. As to the steering, I have no problem with it. I see no difference from my 325 Ci (2003 so hydraulic not EPS).Frankly, I don't want to have to muscle my car's steering, especially when parking. The sport mode makes it heavier for sure. I think some are used to driving tanks!

Test drive one.

I have, but it's not easy to push the limits with a BMW salesman sat next to you, and I certainly don't feel comfortable doing that with a private seller.

Seemed OK, and can't be any worse than what I'm coming from I suppose... Astra VXR. Perhaps Lau can help, as he came from a VXR?

Anyone with any ideas on the servicing front? If not, I'll give BMW a call, to find out for sure I guess. I'm presuming as one of the cars I'm looking at is nearly 2 years old, it'll need an oil service regardless, and also need the brake fluid doing.

I really think you need to decide some of these things yourself now, you've got a lot of facts and I think you need to spend some time at the dealers and see you how feel.

It's blatantly going to need a service by the sounds of it, BMW should be able to tell you if it's missed one.
