hi guys,

thinking of a foray into the world of vintage porsches but i know next to nothing about them, so please help. it's actually a shell lying in the workshop and for about 40,000GBP, it'll be restored to whatever specs i want and fitted with modern amenities like power steering, brake booster, ABS.

i'm looking at at 1984 unit, originally fitted with a 3.3L engine but now with a 3.6L turbo mated to a G50 gearbox. i haven't really looked at it in much detail so i don't even know what model series i'm actually looking at... i'm assuming its aircooled, so any problems with overheating and all that? erm, some research has thrown up problems with the aircon in older porsches, true, false?

anything else i should be aware of other than accident history? any idea what the cost of maintenance will be like? is it possible to drive such a car as a daily driver? i hear the clutches are really heavy, is it possible to fit it with a light enough clutch that my mum with mild arthritis will be able to drive it as well on weekends?

oh, and it definitely needs a new paint job and possibly some new sideskirts and bumpers; i don't really like the bumpers with the black plastic bits... and i don't quite fancy the rubbery wing that it comes with. any idea what's available out there?

thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.

cheers

louis vintage Porsche ownership is not for the faint hearted, I think the fact that you mentioned you know very little about them will not help - sorry to sound a bit negative :(

What else could you get for £40k where you live?

Sounds a bit odd, for £40k !
a 3.6T engine will be from what is commonly known as a 964 turbo 2
It should be aircooled unless it is very odd then it could be from an older watercooled 996turbo but i doubt that indeed due to the plumbing problems,

Personally i think id steer clear, to expensive and cant really be a vintage motor as its been b@stardised too much

IMO of course

oh and as for aircon in older models, assume it wont work, not many do

Sorry i too am negative about this unless you have pots of cash, I am ex porsche myself and it is ringing bells, expensive ones.........

Wondermike

GBP 40k wouldn't even get me a E90 320i...

maybe a 2.0 jag x-type after some heavy discounts? as reference, a new 2.5L Z4 costs a little more than 65k and the Z4M close to 100k.

Elliot

thanks for the warning.
:(

i guess i'd better inspect it thoroughly before doing anything rash!

What is GBP? I was assuming the "usual" Great British Pounds...

But if you're saying a Z4M is close to 100K, then I guess I'm on the wrong foot... lol

Really, where do you live? Emigrate to the US or Canada, much better option.

Crazy pricing, even if you want to buy one somewhere else and import it.
