Buying a 2003 Z4 3.0i

Welcome.
I paid that for a 2004 3.0 which was fully loaded apart from heated seats. Mine has 58000 miles and I have spent £1500 on it. Changing the tyres, new brakes and discs all round. Sounds like a good price to me.
Look into what needs doing:
When was the last service and which one as it? If it was recent call up the dealer and check what they recommended needed doing and check what the owner did?
What the tyres like? Run on flats are nearly £200 a side for the rears.
Good luck looks like a lovely car. Let see some pictures if you buy it in the gallery.

Cheers Ian

Thanks for the reply Ian.

Just had Inspection 1 and new discs / pads up front and good run flats all round. Garage can confirm the servicing (run by BMW acredited mechanics so they know the car).

Really tempted to just make the jump and get it!

I came from Mercs my last car was a CLS diesel but due to needing double glazing on the house I down sized to release some cash. I must say after owning it for a couple of weeks I love it. It is a big change but it always puts a smile on my face. Just getting it restored to its former glory. Had the rear springs fixed today and it drives much better. I find it not such a pain in the back since changing from run on flats to Falkens. I am really pleased that I got a manual as its a drivers car, though a smg was preferred. I have the basic stereo and cd changer and its not too bad. The one your looking at seems to have that sorted. All I can say is roll on the summer. Good luck with the buy.
Cheers

Hi Dan

As the owner of a 2003 3.0i I can tell you you'll find it a good car. The example you are looking at seems to be a good one. Low mileage, good colour, fairly mileage and a full history, sports button and heated seats. It lacks Sat nav, sports seats and has unsusual wheels.

Priice is reasonable for age and mileage.

Ignore the MOT and get it checked over or a decent warranty and test drive ir properly

I was wondering about the alloys but I quite like them now - saw a Gunmetal Grey Z4 with CSL alloys and it looked brilliant (always the opportunity to change alloys come tyre replacement day!).

This may cause some debate but I thought that getting a vehicle inspection done (family owned rather than AA / RAC job) and then bid on the basis of that. I am basing my assumption that there really should be little wrong with a fairly young car anyway. I know they will look for the most trivial of issues to justify the cost of their inspection but I think it is worth it - comments / thoughts?

Unless you are very mechanically minded and know what you are doing then I would always advocate a decent inspection and then possibly an aftemarket warrranty. I don't actually like RAC and AA as they are a bit basic, but better than a naiive purchase.

Theya re very sound cars but of this era be checking if the reart spirings have been replaced (cheap but weak) and ensure everythign works well inc. the hood that sometimes the motor fails on.

Welcome

Looks a nice car and full history  as said above if you are not sure get someone to check over the car my mate is a tech for BMW so i was lucky he came and looked mine over and did a test drive its worth it as parts are not cheap on these cars but i am still smiling after nearly two years of owning mine :D

All the best mate

Thanks for all the advice thus far - generally positive which is good.

I appreciate that nobody has a crystal ball, especially in this financial climate, but if I were to sell the car in the summer of next year (may have to get a sensible car when we have children!) would I be looking at getting similar money for it?

The problem with the bloody internet is that you think you want something and then you see another completely different car and think 'Hmmm, that may be fun' and then the whole cycle starts again! I am still convinced that the Z4 is the way ahead though.

Real tough one on values as they dipped then over the last 6 months have actually risen by perhaps 20% (for the older models in particular) Summer still has some positive effect on softop prices, but I'd expect to lose in the ensuing 9 months. I'd bank on a £1000 loss, but as you say nobody has a crystal ball

On the value I personally think the Z4 has reached that point now where depreciation has really slowed. What would you buy otherwise? Depending on what that is you could lose more on something else that is on a different part of the depreciation curve. More significant is going to be what needs spending on any car in the next year.

Reference an inspection, I'd try and find a specialist. Otherwise I think either AA or RAC may offer some comeback on an inspected car - may be worth taking the corresponding warranty, friend had an RAC one on his TT which wasn't too expensive.

Great car though and I really like that colour - was the colour of the first Z4 I saw and made me think "I WANT!"

I thought the alloys on the car were pretty common but Gannet states he has not seen them before - I assume they are genuine BMW options though?

Not a z4 wheel...

similar to a style 108... just had a browse aound here: BMW Wheels and it looks like Style 179 for the 1 series (1er E87 u.a.)...

I like 'em bet the suffer from similar problems that the 108s do

as I said, I quite like 'em

Spot on - good eyes!

What problems do the 108s suffer from - I assume it is corrosion as these have been refurbished recently.

Hoping that these will be ok now that they have been refurbed.

I guess there are always other cars around the corner but the feedback so far seems that this one is a good example - I feel I may as well jump in with both feet and enjoy the Z4 experience!
