Bumper respray looks different in direct sunlight

Hi guys, as ive mentioned in a previous post somewhere i recently picked up my new Zed which had had its front bumper resprayed at my request due to stone chips, car is Titan Silver. I picked it up on a dull day and all looked good. However on Sunday morning i went out in the sun and noticed that the bumper has a slight gold/yellow tint to it . Is this normal for newly painted panels and does it go away once the paint it fully cured in a few days? Or is it something i should take up with the dealer? I have already sent an email, waiting for a reply this morning.

From past experience painted plastic will never exactly match the colour of painted metal. Within different lights they will look slightly different and this is accentuated on lighter metallic colours.

Of coure it all depends on how different the colour is... Im talking marginal that isnt really that noticeable.

Its not hugely different to be honest. Its kept in an underground carpark and under there you cannot see the difference. Outside on a cloudy day its not noticeable. its only in direct sunlight there is an ever so slight hint of gold. Its not a major problem which i think i can live with. Im also looking into getting my bonnet redone as there are a few chips on here that i dont feel confident in touching up myself. I may be able to have them blended so its not as noticeable in the sun i guess.

I have a black car so cannot speak to silver. There are people on the forum who have had silver or grey bumpers sprayed or resprayed (like fitting the handsome aero kits). Anyhow, I had Burt’s front bumper resprayed last year. And there is no colour difference between this and the rest of the car – front wings or bonnet. Not to my naked eye. The panels need to be blended (or whatever the technical lingo is). To be fair I wouldn’t put up with it. If you asked for it to be resprayed by a Dealer when buying, it should be done in tip top condition. Make sure you also take photos. And as the bumper is plastic, I don’t see any big probs with getting it re-resprayed? I can’t stand people who cock up jobs and don’t work to get it right.

If it isn’t noticeable, then maybe leave it. Up to you. Sorry, I made the assumption that you got the car from a Dealer. Is this the case? Even so, such a straightforward job shouldn’t leave you with mismatching colours. I hear red is one of the hardest colours to match. Anyway, maybe get some photos up? I’m curious what it looks like?

Respray looks good doesn’t it?!! After I had bumper resprayed, I also wanted my bonnet done to remove stone-chips. :driving:

Yes you are correct, it was from a dealer (Not a BMW dealer, the car was a PX at a Range Rover Garage i believe). Anyway yea the paint looks fine normally it seems to be the top clear coat that refracts sunlight differently. Ive emailed the dealer and im waiting for a reply (cant call at the mo as im at work). Il see what they say and then go from there.

Okay, well don't take any bullsh*t. I guess they might well try and fob you off. I wouldn't take that and tell them that's it's a job which has not been done to good condition. Good luck, let us know what happens. :driving:

Clear coats are never truly clear and the cheaper they are, the more yellow they appear.
Maybe this is the answer.

When bodyshops say they cant guarantee a colour match because of age/fading, walk away, and go to one that says you wont be able to tell a difference. Too late in this case unfortunately.

Hi all, little update, went out yesterday and the difference has really reduced. Not sure why but it sat in the sun all day Tuesday and Wednesday and now appears to have cleared a little. Im pretty happy with it now, the dealer said that it was official BMW paint and clear coat, i didnt get to see the paint shop as they did it for me along with MOT and service before collecting the car. At the end of the day the guy didnt have to spray it for me and i still managed to get a few hundred off the price of the car so i cannot complain too much. But like i say its almost identical now and i have read in numerous places that there is likely to be a little difference between metal and plastic panels.

I need to get some photos up this weekend so will try and get a shot in the sun (if we get any this weekend) to show it.
