Build date vs. Registration Date

German luxury car maker BMW said on Tuesday that it had lost millions of euros' worth of goods in the shipwreck of container ship MSC Napoli, which has been stranded off the southwest English coast. "We're talking about losses running into the single-digit millions" of euros, a BMW spokesperson said.

"It's going to take us ages to dry them out and get them back into showrooms."

The containers, which had been insured, were carrying Z4M coupes, engines and parts, all destined for BMW dealers in the South of England, he said.

maybe bought for an investment and not registered, hell, i dont know , I own this car now and absolutely love it, i dont think anything sinister but i guess it would be peace of mind to know the full story.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I find this interesting..

My car took 5 months to be registered after the build date. Whats the average build > sale time for most cars?
 
Depends - a lot of cars are now built to order due to manufacturing costs to build a load of cars that may not sell. I know its an old thread, but i think the OP is overreacting. It is so common these days for cars to be built and not be registered. Loads of Jap cars do it - there are a load of Evo 10's still unregistered in the UK and in Japan that were built in 08, but they are dry stored so no harm. If it was sat in a salt bath from time coming out of the factory until day of registration then i'd be bothered.
 
thanks for that steve 220, makes me feel better, i only purchased car a month ago ; have spoken to stratstone derby and bmw re this car, the pdi check was actually recorded on their system as being carried out on 21 july 2008 not 2007 which clears up most of my concerns, bmw inform me that it is not unusual for vehicles to be in a sorage facility for a long period before registration sometimes, but assured me the vehicle has no dubious former secret life and was not a bmw press or demonstration vehicle before registration with stratstone derby on 27 june 2008 but new and unused. lets put this post to bed now, i'm off for a spirited blast !!!

The scenario you are highlighting is already replicated with this car as it took 7 months to get form the build in the USA. For reference the car I actually bought (and have since sold) took less than 2 months to make the same journey. Anyway that wasn't the concern at the time, it was the 13 months that it was in the dealer network that was the issue.

In respect of Evo 10s sitting in a warehouse somewhere - well I'm not surprised really, given that they are generally considered to be a bit sh1t. However I did some research and can find no reference to the fact that there are still some available, at least in the UK. Best I got was somebody selling the last of the RSs for a knock down price last year. Can you enlighten us?

First mad4slalom I'm glad that you are enjoying the car. Back in 2009 prices for Z4Ms were very different to now and there was plenty of supply so there was no need to take a chance. It's also worth pointing out that the dealer in question I was dealing with tried to cover up the anomaly, at least initially.

However, despite what you've said I stil think it's odd that a car doesn't get registered for 13 months after arriving at the dealer. I'm sure it makes no difference to you, but dealers are in the business of selling cars and it makes no financial sense to keep a car for 13 months, especially one that is, as I previously highlighted, well specced. If it was something esoteric, say a Spyker or a slow seller like a Citroen C6 then fine, but it's not, it's a BMW. In light of your new information It's also odd that it was registered nearly a month before it had a PDI check, although I don't work in the industry, so perhaps there is a sensible explanation. Out of interest what date is given in your service book for the PDI check, because if I recall it was this that first prompted my suspicions.

As for putting this post to bed, you were the one who dragged it out of the depths of 2009 so you've only got yourself to blame for that one :poke:
 
No idea when mine was actually built..... does it matter!?

These are "fringe" cars though - mine sat at the stealer for 4 months as an AUC
 
an update , this car is a peach , done the cdv and amsoil, the sevice book is stamped 2008 not seven james, just the guy's writing . in the past i missed really good cars by bottling it due to some or other minor concern and regreted it afterward. so glad i held my nerve on this one, could already have sold it for 750 more than i paid but want to enjoy this for a long time yet. not one concern or regret. :driving: :thumbsup:

Weirdly I was the one that bought James_G's silver with red 330i back then too. It is a small world indeed.
 
Sounds just like my car, Built in Dec 2006 Registerd Mar 2008. lovely low mileage, when I bought it in Mar 2011. I've not had so much as an lamp blow in 18 months of ownership so far, I would n't worry to much. :o

I've seen some where it's been claimed to have been 'first registered' a few years after the build date, but have seen that it was actually 'first registered' in Ireland a couple of months after build, and then 'registered' in the UK some years later.
