Broken Wing Mirror Replacement Question..

Hello all

Small request for some knowledge if you please.

My drivers side (offside) mirror fell out yesterday when I closed the door. Fortunately no bodywork damage but the mirror smashed as you would expect.

I have ordered a replacement mirror from eBay (about £10).

My question (relating to the images below): Do I need to remove the strange black thing/stuff left inside the mirror unit before I insert the new mirror? - Is it the old adhesive for example? Or do I leave it because it contains the surface material used by the heating element to transfer the heat across the mirror?

Just to be clear, I have ordered the mirror only - not a complete unit which would include the heating unit.

What you can see there is the heater pad for the old mirror.

Id glue that pad onto your new glass then you'll have the correct mount and get the heating.

I used araldite, others have used silicon.

if you peal that up on the bottom you will find a locking ring. there is a slit you can put a flat head screwdiriver in. push/rotate right (or is it left) to unlock the ring from the body of the wingmirror you can then remove to glue elsewhere.

Mine fell off recently. I would recommend you check if yours are loose, if so remove them and restock to the heating pad with some proper glue, I can recommend mitre bond:

Check them Andy - I expect its due to power-washers around wing mirrors, or may even be age related. Its an easy check and you usually get plenty of notice before they fall off. Also, if your mirror vibrates so you haven't got a clear image when driving, I'd check them out!

Funnily enough, this exact thing happened to me the other day and I think I've worked out why it happens.

I tend to always fold my mirrors when parked ( as you do 8) ), however I noticed that the mirrors in this position are pointing skywards. As we all know, living in England guarantees you one sure thing: rain and therefore when the mirrors are folded, the rain is actually falling inside the wing mirror compartment and causing the mirror to eventually fall off.

Needless to say, I have now stopped folding my mirrors

...if your mirror vibrates so you haven't got a clear image when driving, I'd check them out!

That was the symptom I was experiencing - minor but noticeable vibration of the mirror, particularly at speed.

Nothing to do with folding them up, probably more to do with th glue being heated up and cooling down regularly for several years
