Broken Springs - any in the U.S.???

It seems like all the entries I've noticed so far on this broken rear spring issue have been from the U.K. or Canada.
Have there been any cases on U.S. cars? If not, I think this is very odd.
The cars were all built in the same factory...did BMW spec different springs for U.K. vehicles for some reason?

when it comes to highways/motorways I would take UK ones anyday. Spent 4 weeks driving round west coast of America in a Mustang, awesome place but the highways are shocking!

A Tech Talk article in the most recent Roundel responded to a question about broken E46 springs, which appears to be a common problem. The breakages are being reported on cars in the northeast US. It's the author's opinion that corrosion from weather/salted roads is the primary cause and the protective coating that BMW uses is not up to the job.
