Broken roof divider in boot

Hi all

Does anyone have any idea whether it is possible to get a replacement for the black plastic block hinge that connects the body of the roof divider to the metal poles surrounding it?

I have looked on RealOEM but that seems to suggest that the whole divider needs replacing.

Hopefully that makes sense - it's difficult to describe the broken part.

Common fault. No it's a single piece. Just drill out the plastic plugs and put self tappers or nut/bolt back through.

True. I'd assumed, as the OP asked for a replacement part to presumably fix it themselves, that the car was out of warranty.
 
One of mine broke. I think it had previously been repaired with self rappers, so I've now done it properly with black hex bolts and nyloc nuts as described in the linked post above. Well, I've done one side, need to do the other... :)
 
Thanks all for your helpful replies. The car is under extended warranty, so hopefully I can sort it that way, otherwise I'll look into the repair suggested.
 
Let us know if they fix it under extended warranty. My suspicion is that they won't, but I'm happy to be wrong in this instance.

I have exactly the same problem with a 2010 Z4 which I fixed with three 5/32 bolts HOWEVER I was left with a micro switch error on the CTM ECU:

A693, Microswitch roof pack stowed

This error wouldn't clear and I couldn't find out which, of the many micro switches, this error refers to. So down to my BMW dealer who said the ONLY way to fix this problem is by:

$ 596 New luggage shelf
$ 279 Trim panel left
$ 207 Trim panel right
$ 360 Labour

Are these guys just having a lend of me or is the only way to fix the micro switch error is to carry out all this work?

BTW - the three bolt fix seems fine to me. The broken bit is just as a stable as the bracket on the right hand side of the cover.

Having fiddled with the luggage shelf the only thing that might happen is that it doesn't sit square on the left 'keyhole' shaped lug which contains a Hall sensor. The shelf has a small square metal plate that has to sit flush with the plastic for the Hall sensor to pick up. But this should stop the roof from stowing if it's not working.

Roof stowed micro switch is probably the one up towards the right hand side near where the shelf pivots. A depressed cup that the roof lug locates into when stowed.
If you poke it with a finger you can at least hear it click.

Work up this morning to your reply (in Australia) and immediately started checking things out.

The hall sensors seem ok because as I latch/unlatch the cover the Luggage Compartment Separation state moves from Closed To Not Closed.

The micro switch you pointed out does cover Roof Pack Stowed. I can activate it manually and the Roof Pack Stowed signal toggles between No and Yes.

I held the Stowed micro switch down and tried to clear the A693 error and it worked! Flushed with naïve enthusiasm I tried to lower the roof and the same issue returned. The roof stopped retracting about a third of the way through the cycle (see photo). The A693 error returns and I can't move the roof either up or down. The Roof Pack Stowed signal is No, but I see the Roof Pack Erected signal also reads No. I would have thought the current condition of the Roof Pack Erected signal should be Yes.

Again, by manipulating the Stowed micro switch I was able to clear the error and raise the roof.

Thanks you so much for your prompt and very informative response. Any suggestions as to where I should go from here. I'm now 95% convinced the luggage separator does not need to be replaced!

Update. Took car to michael mcmichael in adelaide who found and fixed a broken wire. $190 and all fixed. The $1500 to replace the divider would have fixed nothing!!!
Highly recommend michael mcmichael.
 
Could you highlight the area of the harness that was repaired, for the benefit of others who may get this problem please? :thumbsup:

I am sure some other poor soul will have this problem at some point in the future....
 
Good idea.

I couldn't work out how to embed an image into the post so URL's will have to do. My Z4 is right hand drive.

Standing at drivers side along side the major roof hinge looking down. This is the repair to fix current problem. This is the wire going into the micro switch the original post referred to.

Same place just a foot to the left. The red tape is covering a wire repair. In this case the wire was damaged by my own stupid action in not packing gear into the boot properly. I'm showing the pic because that part of the roof wiring is exposed and what I did is pretty to do.

Passenger side looking into boot. This shows the repair I made when the left hand side plastic bit that hold the luggage divider failed. The repair is strong and, in fact, I think I will actually drill out the right hand side plastic bit and add screws in there just prevent that side failing in future.

Could be a weak point to look out for.

My colleagues car had similar failure characteristics. Roof would get stuck in boot and boot lid wouldn't close or get stuck half way as per your car.

Would be interesting to see if the wires are getting tugged as the lid stows.
Or if the microswitch is just positioned poorly.

Looks like an area to keep an eye on. As the roof opens and closes the braided wire loom rubs over the microswitch cable.
The microswitch cable is bent back and forth as the roof opens and closes.
 
Just an update in case anyone is interested. The dealer has refused to cover a replacement divider under the extended warranty, on the basis that it is a hinge and/or trim. Telling the dealer that other people have had the part replaced under warranty did not seem to make any difference. I think repairing the hinge will be the way to go!
 
My hinge has broken now. What a cheap piece of crap!
Now having to go the Brunel route and find some BIG bolts to hold it all together.

This is my first and last BMW, I think they are overrated.
Although I need to keep this now as long as possible to get my monies worth.
 
I came on the forum this morning to start a thread about my broken roof divider and then noticed this thread!

If I was wanting to buy the part (I believe it is 51479128488) rather than begin drilling, does anyone have an idea of where I could source it or the cost of the part?
