Broken my first 326M alloy :(

I made the decision to swap out my run flats for a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4s, partially to improve the ride but also to reduce the chance of cracking an alloy .. all 4 of which had been refurbished when I bought the car in December. I ordered the tyres at the weekend and was due to have them fitted today.

I've been driving around like Miss Daisy all week knowing I had a set of refurbed 326Ms with no cracks and I just had to get to Friday. Last night on a back road .. BANG! .. Bollox :headbang: . Went in today to get the new tyres fitted and sure enough the front alloy has a nice crack in it.

The wheel is now off for repair at a place where I think they might need to give me some sort of loyalty card if I keep these wheels.

I'm considering a different set of wheels. Are there any recommendations for tougher 19'' wheels that may withstand the shite roads that we have in the UK? Any suppliers to avoid etc? Any to go with?

Thanks

Your post begs questions.

Did your seller refurb cracked wheels?

Why are you bothering to repair a cracked wheel, which (a) will crack again and, so, which (b) it makes sense to replace, anyway, and which (c) you won't want to sell for it to crack with someone else?

And, finally, do people really believe that tyres crack wheels? Because that's plainly nonsense on stilts.

Take some wheels with low profile tyres and giving them an extra hard sidewall will not help matters at all

It’s fairly common knowledge that runflats have extremely stiff sidewalls which transmit a lot more shock into...shall we just say...less than perfectly designed 326’s. On the plus side, they seem to fair a good deal better on normal tyres. But they do look so good. Just terrible luck for the OP happening when it did.

No i'm sure the majority of people who apply common sense & logic will understand that a mix of things causes the cracks , wheel design , tyre size ( profile) tyre pressure being 3 factors along with size of pothole & speed you strike it , factor in a almost rigid sidewall with rft as opposed to non runflat & there are ways to increase or decrease your chances

Come on, mr wilks. They're just bad wheels.

If they were good, they wouldn't crack. :)

It happens to factory fit Vw /Audi /Mercedes alloys.
Its not Bmw specific so you would have to look for other factors that contribute not simply the manufacturer

OP still had run flats on when he hit the pothole....or did you forget to read that bit..?

Yes, you're right. Bad wheels by all manufacturers crack.

I read the bit that said his 326 cracked because he hit a big pothole. And I felt sympathy for him. We've all done it. I didn't see any bit, however, explaining how the wheel wouldn't have cracked on normal tyres. :)

Bad wheels. And expensive to replace.

Full sympathy too of course, no one wants someone to have to shell out. We’ll have to agree to disagree on the wheels, my view is non run flats would have taken the brunt of the hit, not the rim as much but whatever, the subject is just going round in circles......like an uncracked 326......of which there are plenty....
