Brakes not great... What do you guys think of yours?

As a newbie can I have a heads up on this, is it just me (or my pads) or are the brakes not that great? Not exactly thrashing it?

I've seen the post on upgrading to the larger 300mm disks and calipers from a 3 or 5 series (good work who ever that was, you obviously spend ages doing your homework on that)

Do the ZM brakes fit my 3.0i ?

I ain't really got about 2k for a big brake upgrade!

I will be putting some padgid pads and disks on in the meantime

I find brake fade can kick in v quickly on the zed. Bigger brakes or upgraded pads help :thumbsup:

M brakes don't fit that I'm aware of

What issue are you experiencing?

Brakes on the Zed seem pretty good and your 3.0 already has larger brakes than the 2.5 or smaller engines.

The e46 330 disc and caliper conversion is cheap and makes a significant improvement. First though I'd check your pads and discs.
 
I have Ferodo ds2500 pads on the front of mine, 3.0si coupe, and the pedal feel and stopping power are great, but I cant compare them to standard as i bought the car with them fitted.

They do squeak a little when cold but still work very well, dont believe what some people say about them being terrible when cold. When warmed up, say 3 or 4 slows the squeak goes and the stopping power is great :thumbsup:

I,m interested in this ...... I find the brakes a tad wanting at times
Do I need just the discs and calipers plus pads or are there brackets etc that I'l also need ?

Mine dont inspire much confidence upon the initial bite, but work very well as the pedal goes down.

The pedal travels too much though, compared to my mums e90
 
I find the brakes on my 3.0l are like an anchor being chucked out. My recent lucky escape on the m6 is testament to this.

I don't get fade or anything. Easilly some of the best brakes I've had I think. The only ones I like better (but they arnt as good) are the non assisted solid disc ones on my westy

I've started the brake upgrade, I have the caliber in my garage I've just refurbed them with new pistons and seal


You need:

Calipers
Carriers
Pads
Discs

That link you posted doesn't have the carriers

Also while your at it why do you upgrade the fluid to 5.1 and install some braided stainless steel hoses

Cheers for that , the bigger brakes is one mod I,de like sooner rather than later ........ but the mod list is growing at an alarming rate, and at the time of purchase I was determined NOT to mod this at all :?

Personally always found the stock brakes on mine (Z4C) have been really good. My previous car (Mondeo ST200) had woeful brakes really though which makes the Z4 seem good. When Ford had slapped a bloody heavy V6 into the ST they'd never upgraded the brakes to suit so weren't up to the task and had horrific brake fade.

Lol that's what you always start saying

I got the calipers and carriers at a breakers for £100 and the refurb sets were £60 for two including pistons

Then its just whatever discs and pads you want to run with

I love my brakes - they stop me, all the time. I love them best when they are smoking just a little :D

The pedal travel gets less when pushing on, as I believe from another thread that the car primes them if it senses hard braking / acceleration.
 
I'm trying to fi d a decent set of cross drilled pads and by accident found a link on bimmerfest on thermal cracking between holes on cross drilled disks - anyone familiar with this??

Yup don't get drilled discs

Also groved discs will rip up your pads

I had dimpled and grooved discs on my last car... They are much nosier... Prob wouldnt go for them again.

But drilled discs are stock on the M. Sure some from a decent brand... EBC, black diamond etc would be fine.
