I have a 2005 Z4 2.5 with about 20,000 miles. What is the average life span of factory brake pads. I bough my car new and i am getting the message in my dash to replace the pads. Thanks in advance

depends on how you drive, and the type of road use use.

On my last 3 series coupe I got through a set of front pads and discs at 22,000 miles and a set of rear pads at 24,000 miles,

using more major roads with the Z'f so hoping to get more

The Z4 has a light in the dash to advise of worn brake pads? Is this for all Zeds (i.e 2003 onwards)? Wow, cool...I was wondering when my pads are due so will keep an eye out for it.

Once the light comes on, you have to replace the sensor as well. There are two sensors on the car, one at the left front, and one at the right rear (standing behind the car).

Do the sensors need replacing by your local stealership, or can anyone do them?

You can buy the sensors from http://www.bavauto.com/ and put them in. Bavarian Auto also has PDF instructions on how to do it if memory serves me correctly.

yes, that is very easy. Cost about $10 I think at your end. I just replaced the pads of my X5 last weekend, the sensors had half worn through ... It was at 40K miles though.

Replacement time per wheel is about 15 minutes, but it depends on how easy it is to get the wheel off ... (also, in the case of my X5, my jack could not raise the car high enough).

They've got the brake pad sensor wire rear, Part # : 34 35 6 757 896; and front Brake Pad Wear Sensor Wire, Front . Not a bad price either $15.95 for the rear and $9.95 for the front. Looks to be pretty simple to install as well.

It is very simple, yes.

Try to do the job in the summer ... last weekend it was -4 and rather chilly to work on the car :D

-4... ..not a problem, I don't do much driving in the winter anyway, too cold for top-down. I drive it enough to keep the keys and battery charged and the fluid circulating - don't want it sitting too long.
