Brake upgrade question - Type 200 and Type 32 Wheels

Has anyone successfully upgraded their brakes to large calipers and discs with Type 200 style 17’’ wheels? If so, can you make a recommendation as to what I should be buying?

Ideally I’d like to stay on 17s, just with a bit more bite and visual presence from the brakes.

Plan B is type 32s on 18s, so any recommendations of what works well with these would also be really gratefully received.

As an aside, do people think I’d sell type 200s in good condition with 3k mile old Goodyear F1 Assymetric 6s on easily enough?

I don’t want to buy the wrong kit based on an AI recommendation! As always, thank-you in advance all, for what I know will be a stream of invaluable advice!

And just to double check, are these Type 200s?

They are style 200, yes

You could fit the 330d/i front brakes from an E46 for a bolt on upgrade under 17" if you want a budget option. (Also used on the 3.0si e85/6. You can get calipers/carriers on eBay for under £100 if you look correctly)

Otherwise I'm sure there's aftermarket 4 piston calipers etc, but the cost will go up, and I don't know much about the range there

Thanks @TriggerFish, good to confirm I’m talking about the right wheel 👍

They car is a 3.0Si, so would that mean I’m already running the same calipers as an E46? Or did you mean they can be used and would fit?

You are already on the biggest brakes for a non-M E85, so why do you want to go bigger? Unlikely a bigger brake would work with you 17s, as these are the minimum size for the 325mm discs you are running, but you should have plenty of scope to upgrade under the 18” 32s.

I might be interested in your 200s.

Thanks @Zedebee, that’s exactly what I need to know.

TBH it’s totally aesthetic on my part. Shallow I know… Having previously bought a lowered 3.0i Sport that was on 18s, I’m just a little cautious about moving away from the 17s. The car drives beautifully and is life and day more comfortable than my old Z, which is why I hesitate on making the move to 18s.

Let me mull it over but I may well DM you for a chat about the 200s. North Hampshire is only up the road.

You could go with the little known genuine bmw drilled brake disc option. Standard 325mm and 17” alloys not an issue.
Not cheap though.

Thanks. Cheaper than changing wheels and buying a bigger brake kit though….

True, a fair bit lighter than the standard disc and pretty as requested. 👍🏻

They are certainly a good price. I don’t think they be as light as the bmw ones, because they look like one piece with less and smaller perforations. But if you do like them they’re £85.99 on the AUTODOC app currently.
I think it could be shw that make the bmw ones and here’s some on eBay to compare but a lot more money…

@RMB Many thanks, that’s the offer I’m looking at. I’ve not used Zimmerman before but based on previous comments on here, reviews and AI, I can’t see what’s not to like at that price? The car won’t be tracked and the most demanding thing it will do this summer is a drive to Bordeaux, so I’m figuring these meet the use case well.

Just waiting on a quote for this plus some preventive work to replace the water pump, expansion tank and thermostat.

Bread and water for the rest of the month after that….😂
