I’m a Z4 enthusiast just like all of you. This is actually my third Z4, and I plan to keep this one in my collection for good. It’s a 2004 Z4 3.0 SMG.
I recently removed the dashboard to do a few minor modifications, and now while putting everything back together I’ve run into two or three problems that I simply can’t solve, even after hours of searching on Google. So I’m hoping someone here might be able to help.
The biggest issue first:
1. Brake light switch/sensor
My brake lights are on all the time. When I traced the problem to the brake light switch, I found the 4-pin connector… but it was completely empty inside – the plug is there, but there are no wires going into it! I have absolutely no idea how this happened. Everything worked perfectly before I started, and I never touched that area during disassembly. Now it looks like the wiring has somehow disappeared! Has anyone ever seen anything like this?
2. Steering wheel connector
I refurbished the steering wheel and removed everything from it. I’ve put it all back together and everything seems fine, except I have one 3-pin connector left over and I have no idea what it’s for or where it should go.
3. Center console connector
After reinstalling the center console, I also ended up with one large 2-pin connector that doesn’t seem to connect to anything. I don’t know if it’s an original unused connector or if I’ve missed something. This one is the least important issue, but it’s driving me crazy not knowing what it’s for.
I’d really appreciate any advice or wiring diagrams you might have. The brake light switch problem is the worst one because it was working perfectly before, and now it almost looks like I somehow pulled out or damaged the wires while removing the dashboard, but I honestly don’t know how. I can’t find any useful wiring diagram, and the mystery 3-pin steering wheel connector is also worrying me.
