Brake Fluid Change

Just checked my car as I thought brake fluid change might be due soon.
Dealer service book is nicely stamped showing done last changed November 06, so the next should be 24 months later and therefore expected around 11/08

The onboard display shows '0810' so is this displayed UK or US format? If UK then how does it come up with a date way over 2 years in the future, or is this October 8th? Confusing.

Regardless I plan to do it anyway, so what spec/grade of brake fluid is OEM as the handbook says nothing. :headbang:

Thanks gannet. It would make sense given that would be just shy of 24 months

In terms of DOT4 - thanks BlackSappireZ - I'm sure you're right and that's my instinct but can anyone give a certain response it's DOT4?

Yes, 100% dot4 synthetic.

I just checked the bottle in the garage as well

Hi!

Just had my 3oK service, I asked the stealer to do the brake flush----You will feel a difference with new fluid:-)

When I flushed mine at 50K I used SuperBlue from Turner Motorsports...

Hope the e-mail from Dave Zeckhausen is helpful:

... It's always a good idea to flush the brake fluid when you change your pads. BMW recommends a fluid flush every 24 months. Typically, a one liter can is more than enough to bleed the brakes. Any good quality DOT4 fluid is fine and most aftermarket stuff is better than what BMW puts in the car. I like ATE TYP 200 (what we sell) and you can also get Valvoline SynPower DOT4 at almost any auto parts store.

Easy job....say cj10jeeper, why not SS brake lines???? :poke:

20ducks - of course the easiest job in the world to do. Having built some brake systems from scratch (matching master cyliders to wheel cylinder for rate and balance and sourcing other manufacturers calipers and rotors to get the right set up to hold a jeep at 45 degrees. My Jeep uses a very nice front Chevrolet Malibu '84 brake pad and caliper on the rear, with a UK rotor..lol) I think I can tackle the fluid.

I was actually considering a hose change as it should improve the pedal feel and who really wants to bring a car down from 155mph relying on 4 bits of 5 year old rubber hose??.

Any recs. on a particular SS hose supplier or type?

Guys - thanks for the fluid recommendations

Zeckhausen again for those, I liked those when I helped someone fit those.

Are all cars in the American format? Mine says "1.08" which I presumed to mean Jan 08? So am trying to work out whether I should be changing the brake fluid or not... How do you reset the brake fluid service interval?

Update: I have just checked the manual and it says its in the form "month.year" so it is indeed Jan 08. However I also just checked the service record and the brake fluid was changed Oct 07, 9000 miles ago and is not due to be changed until Oct 09, does anyone have any idea why the service interval is indicated "1.08" for brake fluid?

I think you have rightly reopened this one. Confirming the date format is 'month, year' then mine is a strange date of 08/10 indicating it's next due in over 2 years from now, when in fact it was actually last dealer changed and stamped 11/06. That would indicate a 4 year period between changes.

I'm now confused about how this is being set

Regardless I will be changing the fluid shortly

The stealer who did mine (just before I purchased the car) didn't even use extension tubes on the bleeder valves! So it "juiced" brake fluid all over inside the fenderwells!! WOW! how professional can you get? :x

Got my problem sorted, after a quick telephone call and visit to my local BMW Specialists Bartley UK, Southampton they reset my trip interval for the lovely price of free and all is good! :)
