Brake Discs Replacement

I had my Z4 serviced at the weekend, they said next year it will need new front and rear discs.... at a cost that is a decent % of the price I paid for the car.

I looked online and found brembo discs for £270 (for all four wheels)

Just wondering if its possible to replace without going via BMW and what advice you may have, or what challenges I may encounter!

I don't plan on changing them myself...

BMW quoted around £720 for the job!

I bought MTec slotted and dimpled for mine, cost was about £135 all in..

I also have mtec discs. Buy the brakes, and get a decent Indy to change them for you, that price is extortionate.

Hi James,

£720 does sound pretty expensive, but cost will always be dependent upon which model of E89 you have!

It sounds like the quote may be from a main agent - personally I always use an independent BMW specialist, but any competent mechanic should be able to change your brakes.

If you have someone you have used, or who has been recommended, maybe have a chat with them about it. Or go to the Forum homepage and search the Dealer Feedback thread to find someone recommended in your area. See if they would be prepared to fit parts you bought, but if you are fitting new discs don't forget you will need new pads too so costs can rack up pretty quickly!

Finally just a thought, but if you mention your location there may even be someone on here who can help you out!

Good luck.

As above, but I would do them myself, in fact I have done the fronts and will be doing the rears soon. Where are you based.

I fitted the dimpled and slotted discs, might be Mtec. They make noise when the brakes applied. I would go back to plain discs when they wear out.

Thanks for all the feedback!

I am based just north of Birmingham, in Lichfield.

Car is a 20i so doesnt need the huge breaks from some of the other models!

I would like to get as close to stock breaks as possible, so plain discs etc.

I have a pretty decent jack and a few tools!

Ill have a look at recommended BMW indys in the area.

I was wondering if the sensors or computers needed re-setting with any specialised equipment, but
Im guessing not based on some of the responses!

Hi James, I have just had front and back changed in the last 3 weeks. Brembo front discs and pads, £110 all in from Eurocarparts plus sensor at £12. An easy fit yourself so long as you have a 7mm Allen key and a good socket set for the calipers bolt. No reset required if sensor seated correctly. I then had independent do rears, I think it came in at about £270 with him buying all the bits and fitting. Much more complicated as the electronic handbrake needs resetting?. You could save loads on your quote.

Thats about half price!

I will seek out some Indys and maybe can do the front discs myself!

Thanks again!
