If the bottom arm ball joints are shot they will knock over bumps i understand but has anyone experienced the 'knocking' noise it causes because i think mine are gone on the n/s but the noise sounds as if it's comming from within the centre of the dash/bulkhead area, is this how the noise will transmit into the cabin ????

Check your diagonal strut braces are torqued properly. It's a common problem that they knock/rattle due to insufficient torque setting from the factory. I don't want to scare you but I had a knock from the bulkhead area and it turned out to be a broken weld! If I were you I'd check all the suspension bolts just to make sure nothings come loose.

just checked them though and they are solid ??
Going back to the bottom arm another sign it maybe the n/s one is that today i was over speed bumps and it doesn't knock when the o/s wheel only goes over the bump but the noise sounds to come from the exact place where the diagonal braces bolt to the bulk head, is this a coincidence and it must be the bottom arm ball joints ????

SORTED....:roundel: ....after much mucking about and riding down the street sat in the engine bay.. 
i located the problem to be at the top of the strut, flipped off the plastic cover housing the nut on top of the shock and it was as loose as a whores nickers..nipped it up and job done...
