Both seat backs falling off

I just purchased an 03 Z4 with Sport Package and Premium Package. For some reason both seat backs are falling off. I have purchased new trim pieces to hold the backs on but on one of the seat backs the seat back material has broken where the trim piece goes on and I plan to fix that with fiberglass. Any thoughts as to why both seat backs would be off?

Hi Les, welcome to the forum - if you haven't seen it, there a Newbies section for intros (pictures help a lot).

I take it this was a private sale and no dealer to throw it back at?

If you look at the diagram below you'll see the back cover is a single piece with no screws, so it is odd...

I recently undid the seat cover on the backrest and the back stayed firmly in place, so there must be points where they click into place. I'd check and see that these all look in tact then check the back of the seat. Make sure the back of the seat pad isn't mis-shapen or obstructing the contact points.

Only other option is it sits on the back of the foam and this has become mis-shapen. You could try and steam it back into shape - IIRC steam foam will help it recover its original shape.

Hope you're enjoying the car

Hi They dont just clip on. the clips are shaped like sort of squared off blunt hooks You have to lift the back up a little put it in place on the seat and then move it down a little to allow the two hook type clips to engage. Hope this helps

Thanks for all of the replies. I had to pull the seats (pretty easy) to get the seat backs on properly. They snap into place and are held on with the nylon rivets at the bottom of the seat back. Now that I know how to do it I might be able to put them back on without taking the seats out, if they fall off.
