Replacing my original BMW battery on Z4 3.0 2004 model with a new Bosch battery but confused !

Europarts sell Bosch battery S3 (007) model but Bosch themselves dont recommend
Bosch say go for S4 (005) model but Europarts only sell S4 (007)

Anybody out there fitted a Bosch battery on a Z4, if so which one and WHY ?

I bought a bosch silver battery from Halfords, its sitting in the garage (removed it before trading the 3.0 in), fits perfectly, was of higher CCA rating and has a long warantee. I will check the numbers on it and report back this evening

Thanks Adam very much appreciated, may i ask what size it was

Thank you so much Adam, really helpful advice, I think I will go for the next BOSCH model down with a 4 year guarantee (Bosch S4 007) CCA = 680A, 72Ah, and it weighs in about 2kg less approx & costs a bit less

Batteries are weird because Bosch recommend the S4 005 = CCA 540 , 60Ah which is less than my original BMW battery (now dead) = CCA 570, 70Ah !!! Maybe you dont quite as much power ?

When I asked Bosch technical advice Helpline, WHY they recommend a battery less than original BMW power they could not give me an answer, surely a bit more power is better than less ?

BMW dealer was the same, they only suggest like for like when i asked if i could fit more or less power they said best to go for a bit more power, like you did but they said they could NOT endorse it.

The bottom line is if the battery fits and the power is the same or more it should be fine, plus its guaranteed for 4 years as with the S4 Bosch but your is 5 years obviously.

kind regards Chris

Well I had a 2003 3.0 and that battery fitted perfectly (type 96) ;) I'd trust my advice over eurocar parts in that regard, it even had the fitments for the terminal covers and the vapour pipe :P

Essentially S3 is a basic battery, S4 better and S5 is their premium quality battery, S6 uses different technology and wasn't around when I bought mine. When buying batteries I tend to buy the biggest and most powerful I can for the space allowed :)

Not that I've got it in for HJ at the mo but when I was in the parts department recently two tech were arguing about which battery to put back on a car (the car had had the OEM one replaced at some stage and they couldn't agree what the replacement should be replaced with). The senior tech apparently couldn't help and I think the settled on asking the customer which one they wanted.
