I’ve had this lying about in the boot of my E89 since I bought the car. Can anyone please tell me what it is and where it goes?

Could it be to put the wind deflector in?

I don’t think so. It is a screen not a bag. To give some idea of scale it is 115cm long by 12cm wide.

It goes on the edge of the shelf behind the seats and attaches to each side.

And is perfectly sized to retain a miniature wire haired dachshund puppy. :D

Am I the only person who's wife bought a dog to fit the car?

Please note, previous statement is tongue in cheek. Would not put the dog in there really!

Wouldn't want to make a mess on the windscreen if I braked hard

Thanks Nictrix that makes sense. I’ll give it a go later on this afternoon. Unfortunately we don’t have a small dog to try it out! 😉

Funnily enough we have had a dog in this space since we bought the car.
His name is apparently Rufus and sits quite happily in the space looking between the seats.
It is a stuffed toy, not real.

Be very careful OP. If your other half hears you talking about screwing 'a net' on the Z4 parcel shelf you could have a bit of explaining to do!

+1 When I first got the car I struggled for a while trying to figure out where it went.. lol
not found a huge amount of use for it though, other than holding a hat and water bottle. I suppose its something!
