Boot lid struts

Hi All

Just a random question, but how heavy should the boot lid feel?

I didn't pay much attention to it until I asked one of the yougens to open the boot and they couldn't lift the lid, then realised, it is a tad on the heavy side.

Is that normal or is there a possibility the struts are tired?

Thanks,
R

In my car struts will hold it up but any other posn. boot drops, quite heavy.
Just dampers to slow it rate of fall.

Yeah it's a pretty heavy boot lid on this car. I considered looking into better struts in the past but don't want to put extra strain on the roof motors and potentially wear them out quicker as a result of any extra resistance.

Roof E89 (BMW 54377212634) Stabilus 0728pb 800Nm (special tool required)
Trunk lid E89 (BMW 51247191255) Stabilus 499514 570Nm

Each pair should be replaced by new ones each decade.

Mine is one of the later cars (2016) - boot struts have plenty of resistance in them, and letting go of the boot from about halfway closed sees a slowly damped drop to the closed position.

It feels heavy at open - but I think that is resistance from the struts.

I swapped the rear struts out last year..made a palpable difference…I’ve got the front ones too..I’ll do these this winter ..

Mine drops heavy from any position so think they might need to be replaced. Will hunt around for pricing and take it from there.

Thanks

No, this is actually their mistake:

The entire behavior of the struts is reversed: very heavy when lifting, undamped when falling.

I don't see it on mine Robbi - it's firmly damped in both directions TBH.

And while we are at it - bonnet struts are actually on the maintenance schedule to be replaced every 5 years (something to do with the crash protection). Not the exploding bit, the actual struts.

Mine were changed by the dealer under warranty as should have been changed before I picked up the car.
