Boot hydraulics

Its been pretty cold here in London, regularly dropping below zero. I tried opening the boot yesterday evening on my E86 and I noticed it was damn heavy, in fact it would not stay open at all I had to hold it up. The struts made like a cruchy sound as I lifted it, whats happened?!
 
Struts lose gas pressure given time and often quite quickly. New ones are cheaply available and are easy to replace.

Edit, emailed SGS got a response within a few minutes pointing me at these ones. Two ordered. Will let you know how I get on!
