Hi guys,

The edge of my bonnet is bubbling. my mechanic mate has told me it is rust.

The car is AUC with FSH. What can be done about it?

Car is 2003

Regards
Don

Rust :?

Well, the bonnet is aluminium so it's not rust. But it can corrode.

On another post you said something about the AUC fixing up the car before you bought it, did that include the bonnet / other bodywork? You may want to try the AUC again see if you can get anything under goodwill. Maybe speak to an independent body shop before hand so you know what you're dealing with when you go to the AUC.

What year is it as it will have a 6 year anti corrosion warranty.

Got some work done on mine with about a month to spare. :)

Apart from that. too many variables. how big? some one like chips away might be able to repair it. or you could clean it back and get them to finish it.

See this link:

You should have a claim if your car was registered after this date. Even aluminium can corrode, given the amount of salt on the roads this winter....

body id galvanised so should be under lifetime warrenty! unless you have had non approved repairs

It's only steel and iron that are protected by galvanising (hot zinc dip). The aluminium used for the bonnet on the Zed is, as others have commented, made from aluminium to reduce sprung mass. It forms a natural protective coating when exposed - aluminium oxide - but when further exposed to acidic elements - rain water and in particular salt spray from treated roads the oxidation process accelerates and causes pitting in the aluminium itself. Suggest you explore the warranty route first but I would suggest it will need attention to prevent further acidic corrosion.

Wow, I didnt know that, i have a very strange bit of bubbling near the edge of the boot lid with no damage to the paint,
think il drop it round the dealers today and see what they say.

I wonder if it has had a repair at some stage in the past, this may have a bearing on the current state of the bonnet.

Well its been over a year since I first took the car (after reading this conversation)into BMW Chandlers in Hove,
after many phone calls and visits I have had the bubbling on the boot approved for a warranty repair!!
Happy days, I drop the car off tomorrow morning! :driving:

I called Chipsaway with regards to a small mark on my bonnet a few weeks ago, and the bloke I spoke to said he would not touch the bonnet at all and recommended I took it to a dedicated workshop to get it done.
