Bonnet Catch

I discovered mine was playing up at the weekend. I can't open the bonnet. I think the spring in the catch has probably seized up/broken. It's off to Sytner this week to be sorted as I'm under BMW warranty.

Anyone else had something similar? I vaguely recall having the same problem with my previous E85.
 
Yeah, I've had this too.. needed a new catch - about £50 and 10 minutes work if memory serves!
 
They will probably try and wriggle by saying it's a trim part.

From memory they said that about somebody's dipstick.
 
Mine is sticky, but still opens. I keep lubing the parts to keep it moving. At VW they grease the parts during service to keep it sweet. Surprised BMW dont do the same :idunno:

I had wondered if they would try and do that, hence the reference to quibbling above!
 
My catch was well stuck when I got the car in March. As per the others I used a spray grease, one I use for my bike chain.

Took about 10 mins, pulled out the kidney grills which was dead easy and that gave me good access to spray.

Now just spray it when I have the bonnet open checking oil and water.

Never had any issues since. Its any easy DIY.

No, no no.
By all means use WD40 to free things up, but use light or waterproof grease. In fact anything that doesn't dry to a crusty ball of gooh that will eventually jam any lock, hinge, pivot, etc that it coats.
