Bonnet bump stops - rattle

Noticed i had a rattle on the front end, quite bad, and not unlike the rattle you get when a strut brace isn't torqued up. Took me ages to find out where it was coming from but it turns out to be the bonnet catch that is a bit loose when you press up and down on it.

Apparently these are supposed to be fitted https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=BT92-EUR-04-2006-E85-BMW-Z4_M32&diagId=41_1705

Part 7 (bump stops) on the diagram, don't think I've ever had them, wonder how may others are missing them and don't realise! I guess when I get them they just clip in somewhere...if someone has a picture of where they fit on theirs would be much apricated!

I have these on mine - they are not held on tightly and slide up and down easily so you need to be careful you don’t knock them off when cleaning.

Thanks Bing, just what I was after. I would imagine like you say they've been knocked off at some point and not noticed / bothered to replace, but hopefully they'll cure the rattle.....

I went and had a look at mine earlier and I don't have them either. :(

Two under the bonnet and two under the boot.

Thanks I’ll check those as well.

Agreed Byron, not the best piece of engineering for sure, only really become noticeable now I have stiffer suspension though, wasn’t a problem on standard suspension!

I have mine on, the bonnet is slightly underflush fenders without them. The paintshop of course lost one of them which was pretty visible, I just bought a new one.

Well the £8(!) tiny bits of rubber fixed my rattle, now nice and quiet. Those buffer stops were also broken as you suggested, springs missing on both sides when i took them out so ordered 2 of those as well, cheers!

I've not noticed a rattle while driving, but when I'm cleaning my bonnet the passenger side does push down and spring back up with a 'rattle'. Is this what you're describing?

Yes on the bonnet catches on the front corners though mine was so loose you could use light pressure with one finger and it would rattle about

They where missing when I bought my car in 2008.
There should be a small clear sticker where the bumper meets the fender. Try to line them up for the correct position.

Thanks @bing, this was really helpful, my ocd with my dipped bonnet was killing me. First pic the bonnet had slightly dipped on the drivers side. Got the orginal parts from ebay direct from BMW, £7.80 each

I know it's only millimeters, but it's more obvious when I'm driving!!

Bought 4 pieces as I only had one attached to bonnet

Spot the difference

Added 2 on drivers side, I moved the old rubber stopper to the front near the catch.

Now Perfection 🥰

Question: What's worse than being a perfectionist?
Answer: Nothing!!
I was looking a bit more closely at the photographs provided by Bing, and at an enlarged portion of the RealOEM page that shows that pesky 51237116856. I'd like to propose the the orientation of the bump stop should be turned 180° from the installed orientation shown in Bing's photographs. Seems like it fits more snugly and intersects more correctly with the fender channel. I couldn't determine how AMIN's bump stops were installed. Thanks for tolerating my OCD.

Well spotted @wyshyvanuk, mine are at a 180degree to what bing has them. Otherwise they will fall out more easily.

Also be mindful where you position them, you don't want to be forcing/slamming the bonnet shut every time 😀
