BMW Z4 2003 3.0 Exhaust Help!

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum so hey!

I have a question regarding my z4 exhaust system. It's all currently stock.

I'd like it a bit louder and so I am thinking of getting a backbox. Only issue is with my current stock exhaust, there are two pipes going into the stock backbox and the only replacement ones I can find only have on pipe entrance to the backbox...

Is it me or am I being extremely stupid haha!!

If someone could point me in the right direction I'd be most thankful!

Regards,

Hi there!

To be honest I'm just looking at all mufflers.I'm pretty open to any suggestions

I'm really unsure on this whole topic of exhausts. Which parts fit together which parts will be better to replace etc.

Regards,

I've got same car and I'm gonna leave original back box but do the secondary cat delete. Should look into it. It releases a fair bit of noise.

Just had a quick look and it seems like a few people ha e done it so maybe it's something o could do first.

Is this something I can do myself? Do I need welding tools etc. Where are the secondary cats located and can you link me a piece of pipe that will directly fit back in its place?

Coming off the engine you have the exhaust headers (google "BMW M54 exhaust headers" to get an idea of what they look like). After the headers, the exhaust is one piece all the way back.

Because the exhaust is one piece, most Z4-specific exhausts are "cut and clamp" meaning you cut off your old exhaust and install the new one using clamps and/or slip fit connections.

Check out youtube for an idea on sound. A few brands to get you started: Supersprint, Eisenmann, Remus, Billy Boat, Stebro, Bastuck.

Hi there,

I'll take a look at some although I expect a full exhaust system would be very expensive, more so than I originally wanted to see spend.

Referring to cut and clam do you just mean just the pipes behind the backbox as an example and then just clamp the piping and the new parts together?

I'd still need a Y pipe right?

Hi, it sounds like you're looking at generic exhausts rather than z4 specific ones-this probably wont end well with a poor fit & poor performance/terrible drone being par for this course :(

Why is everyone else able to replace their ones. Have I got a completely different setup as to what I should have or something haha?

I've got no idea what I can do about this then. Apart from spend hundreds at a exhaust place...

I'm pretty much a noob with all of this, so if anyone can find any howtos that would be good. No clue what I can do ..

I have a cybox back box fitted...cost was 220 all in custom made and a great fit and gives a much more prominent exhaust note...a few members also have longlife back boxes which sound better than standard also I believe they run to around 300 fitted..google is your friend

Hi there,

I've tried googling everything.. I might just get the guy to do a full catback system on it. Otherwise I feel this going to be way more trouble than its worth haha!

Unless you're very handy with a welder you are looking at a professional fit being required as you need to cut off the old back box...no idea about removing secondary cats sorry....imho this kind of job is best with money spent with a pro

That's what I'm thinking yeah. Although I wanted to do myself, I will end messing it up! Never welded in my life!

I appreciate the help fellas, when I get the exhaust done I'll upload and share it!

Thanks!

No, you don't need a "catback", since the cats are in the headers and the rest of the exhaust is one piece. Very few companies make one. Remus may.

No, you don't need a y-pipe. Google y-pipe and x-pipe. The standard M54 exhaust has neither. I added one to improve scavenging and sound. Not sure how much it affected the former. The latter, definitely. It now sounds like a true 6 cylinder instead of two 3 cylinder engines. Supersprint makes a y-pipe, but you have to use their muffler. It's expensive.

Yes, you will spend hundreds (or more) for a tuned system. A rebranded or generic system is initially cheaper, but you have to pay someone to custom fit it. And most sound fine with stock headers, but terrible with aftermarket headers.

No, you do not have to weld if you get one of the Z4 systems I mentioned previously. If you don't know what you're doing, take it to a shop and they will cut/clamp the new system on in an hour or less.

Have you got a video of your exhaust system? I'll be getting a cat back system soon and was thinking about replacing my resonator ( where you're secondary cats are? ) with an x-pipe and having quad pipes out the back.
