BMW X1 Concept? *Updated*

I have an Outback LL Bean station wagon that will hold lots and go most places I would never take my Z3. Guess there are cars for every conceivable need out there and BMW keeps building cars and SUV type vehicles, however, I do not have a need for an SUV. I want to see more fuel efficient models that still allow us to have performance we demand! Give me an electric car, I have gone solar at home so I have no problem plugging it in to charge it.

Your Outback wagon is a form of crossover vehicle so in essence you are already a participant in the market BMW is targeting with an X1. The question is whether you want something a little more upscale than what Subaru has to offer.

My experience with Subaru is that they make workable cars for folks who prefer automatics. Their version of throttle control (AKA drive by wire) with a manual transmission car is totally unacceptable for me and I don't buy cars with auto transmissions. I did not like the feel of the Subaru interior at all when we owned one. At slow speeds on dirt roads the throttle was unbelievably jerky and almost impossible to control smoothly. The engine felt like it would only be workable if it were coupled with a slushbox transmission to smooth out the abysmal throttle mappings.

I have to agree with you about the X6 - I really don't understand the attraction to this vehicle at all. It seems like a yuppiemobile that is past its prime for me.

The Outback is husband's car, he is disabled so the automatic suits his specific needs, and it has steptronic capabilities. I put every comfort known to man and available when I ordered the car, it is a 2005. He will never trade that car, with its features and comforts it was considerably less than BMW.

I was taught to drive manual in a VW bug in San Francisco, where it is learn or die! Personally I prefer the manual Z3 giving me enjoyable handling and control, someday it may be the Z4, but I have a whole LOTTA miles to go before I have to make any decision about that.

I almost was considering an automatic transmission when I was looking at replacements for our Subaru just given how limited that market can be if you don't but this is my wife's daily driver and she insisted that I only consider a manual (we have never owned an auto in our 34+ years together). She didn't have a driver's license when we met in Salt Lake City and I had her get lessons to get her license with a manual transmission to begin with and she won't drive anything else ever since (bless her 8).

You pretty much have to order whatever you want in order to get a manual for that market here in the States so dealer bargains are almost unheard of once they have to get the order sheets out. A well appointed Subaru Legacy is awfully close to the X3 in price once the dealer breaks for moving things off the lot are gone.

Back to the OP topic - under similar circumstances an X1 may well be right about the same ballpark for this comparison too......

For Pete's sake, just make a wagon. X5 is the best of the lot, X3 there is just something off about the proportions and the X6 is a BIG auto.

Guess I'll stick with my Z. :D
