Hi all,

I had the BMW Motorsport 4.10 crown gear and pinion (23008437087) installed by Darragh at Everything M this week. Pleased to say it has transformed the behaviour of the car and is the best upgrade I have done to the M since owning her. Yes the engine revs a little higher sat at 70 on the motorway (300ish odd revs according to the tacho) but it is worth it for the improved experience on the B roads.

I highly recommend getting it done if you are considering it!

It’s something I thought I’d probably end up doing once my original needed work, but being able to cruise at ‘good speed’ through Europe without sitting at 5k makes me doubt if it’s the right choice for me.

It’s a shame because on the right road and when not slogging the miles I’ll bet it’s great. I might have to review those revs/gear charts just one more time!

Yes, have a look at the chart again, in 5th doing 110 kph the tach is sitting 3,000 rpm and that's with the 3.90

with the 4.1, at 3k rpm it does 106kph v 120kph of the stock 3.62.

at 75mph or 120kph, stock drive is 3k rpm, with the 4.1 is 3.4krpm. 400 rpm delta, at that speed, not much.

Looking again at the 3.91 and it’s not too bad for higher speed cruising. Keeping it at or below 100 mph doesn’t see a huge increase in revs.

GTspec - you rate the 4.1 above the airbox as a mod? That’s one hell of recommendation!

I mean the airbox is cool and it puts the hairs up on the back of your neck due to the noise but the 4.10 final drive feels like you have noticeable increase in power because of the improvement in acceleration, amazing what gearing can do!

Soooooo tempting! Did you have any issues getting hold of the crown wheel and pinion GT Spec?

Hi mate,

I got it off eBay from a dealer up in Scotland. I have a trade account with my local BMW dealer and they couldn't even match the price.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255494458664?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=VuA9ITTdQ3a&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=azt1a8m5Q3G&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

It's currently cheaper than what I paid for it a few months back

I realise its not the cheapest way of doing it, but Everything M3s does a drive in drive out supply and fit service which is where I went.

I also used Darragh at Everything M but I supplied the crowngear set and 2L of diff oil to save a bit on the total bill.
