BMW M6

In Bmw yesterday & salesman was asking how our 640d was going as that's it almost a year old. My wife fancied a M5 at the time of purchasing but we opted for the 640d instead. He was telling me he had one of his customers in wanting to change his M5 for a 640d as he was now doing more miles for work. £86k 16 months ago, he got £41k for it in part exchange :?

If he paid £86k he deserves everything he got. They are routinely available brand new for low to mid £60's without any real haggling.

The one we looked at M5 it was fully speced. Was £88k special order colour. Before discount !

For a long time I wanted one of these, or its GC sister. Having driven one though, I couldn't get on with the ride quality. Its very harsh/choppy for a big car that's essentially a powerful cruiser. Put me off in the end. The 640D engine is a monster and is truly quick, but that suspension.... I remember arriving back at the dealer after a test drive in a 640D GC and the back left wheel hit a shallow manhole cover at around 25 mph, probably 1.5 inches down from the tarmac. It made a bang and skipped sideways a bit. That's all I needed to know, I couldn't live with that on such a big car, it just felt wrong.

Its a shame to read about the suspension being so harsh but now that you've explained it I guess it makes sense. I too love the look but have never driven one. Had the old E24 6 series and the ride in that was absolutely sublime, on 10 year old shocks and springs too!

That is interesting about the ride. I have not driven one, but before my Zs I had a 740 and before that a 735. And with those I could drive over a kerb if I had to without feeling it.

But that was in the day before serious sports suspension on big cars.

Were those the E38 PVR?

The only BMWs I'd consider buying at this stage would be an E38 728i Sport or the 420i/428i M sport but the ride would HAVE to be much better than the Zed... I wouldnt consider anything worse (hence removing the new 6 from my little list).

I could not justify that amount on a car, nice as it might be, it still is not a super car.

are cars like this bought by individuals or are they perks as part of pay packets?

I bought my first e34 M5s at 3 years old. It was below £20k for a 60k mile model.

Still had the running costs of a £60k car of course :poke:

I had a 640 coupe when mine was in for service and fault repairs 3 days magic unbelievable car to drive .but only buy one 3 to4 years old
couldn't waste that sort of money from new

An E38 was a 2nd car I was looking to get not too long ago on classic insurance.. I've wanted one for the past 5 years but dont do the sort of driving / have the space to justify owning one. :( I'm sure I will get one one day but I cant see it at the moment..
