BMW M Division to Develop New Four-Cyinder Engine

Motor Trend is reporting that BMW's M division will develop a new four-cylinder powerplant for a small 1-Series-based coupe that will bow in 2014. Returning to four-cylinder engines is just one of the measures being discussed as the performance division focuses future efforts at reducing weight and consumption in its limited-production models.

Another engine being developed is an all-new M-specific inline-six with turbos. No word yet on whether it will be a single turbo or a pair that provides the boost. There is even speculation BMW may jump into the V6 foray in the interest of space efficiency. Don't think it can't happen- look at Mercedes for proof that old conventions can be changed.

Pfff... What'll be next... M division tuning PSA engines for use in BMW's? This is not too farfetched, look at MINI...

Yes they need the new M3 V8 in the new Z4= GIVE

I HATE 4pots with a passion, they ALL sound rubbish! when looking for a new car I refused to entertain anything with a 4pot, rules out alot but I need a decent noise!!**

*no 'VTEC, scoobie engines are good comments please - I say

The 4 cylinder motor with the supercharger in my JCW MINI sounded good though! Bring back the supercharger I say!

Don't worry on the engine sound. With emission and noise laws, that will be an electronic sound soon. You'll specify what you want your car to sound like when you order it! You'll probably be able to download new sounds off the internet also! :P

Seriously last month in EVO magazine they tested some electric car that had a V8 sound system, it basically provided a fake V8 sound as you drove, and worked in sync with the revs etc. Shocking!!
