BMW Group petrol additive

Has anyone tried this?

It must be aggressive stuff, because to use it you have to put on gloves, take off the plastic cap, release a ring-pull and then break some aluminium foil, before screwing on the funnel provided.

And it should be good, because it's £13 a 90ml tin.

I really hope it is marvellous stuff OP, but I'm also thinking it is probably just over-priced for what it is.

A bit like the BMW screen-wash that doesn't seem to do anything that the stuff I buy in my local Tesco does, apart from cost loads more!

That said, Redex doesn't need gloves to handle or come in an acid-proof container. :?

And isn't the N54 rated as a 'dirty' engine that needs a 'strong' petrol additive?

I have read only good things about BG44K (from Z4 and Z4M users who track their vehicles) - the general consensus seems to be anything else is either snake oil, or makes barely any noticeable difference. Have never tried it myself as it's not readily available here, but I trust their opinions. Not as expensive as the BMW stuff in your pic I think.

The problem on the N54 (and a lot of other direct injection engines) is that no air/fuel mixture passes over the inlet valves so things can get pretty coked up. It's for this very reason that petrol additives don't help much. The piezo injectors suffer from leaking rather than gumming up generally.

Exactly. The fuel is injected on the piston downstroke but as the N54 is direct injection the only time the additive sees the valve is on said down stroke, very little in other words, apart from the up stroke which is obviously only the valve face. I would have thought using 98 and 99 Ron fuel would do the same job as this additive on a direct injection engine.

Of course Busterboo won’t use those fuels as BMW haven’t personally sent him a letter to tell him to so maybe this is right for him, as for the rest of the ‘normal’ population good fuel is ample on the N54 imho for the reasons above.

Happy to be told otherwise however.

I've used BG44k and was good, now I use Archoil fuel additive. Done so for the last 4 1/2 years and still going well.
I don't think there are any products out there yet to counter the coke build up on direct injection engines.
